Chained Dogs

    Chained Dogs

Have any of you rescued a chained dog???? If so, how did you go about doing it?  Were there any repercussions?  I'm looking for information to maybe form a group of individuals in my area who might be interested in working toward this type of rescue effort.  Right now I am just beginning to look into it.

Are you referring to removing dogs yourself, dogs owned by other people without their consent? Or using the laws and media to have the dog removed by legal means?

Yes, but through Animal Control Officers.  You have to do things right in order for the dog to get the proper care needed.

Here is a picture of Paganini in her old situation.  She is now my foster.  Here's her story.

Paganini is now safe in foster care but before she came to A Caring Place Humane Society, she was seriously neglected - living tied up outside with a hole in the dirt as her 'home.' Paganini's overall body condition was poor, especially her skin due to poor nutrition, terrible living conditions, and fleas; she is finally growing hair back all over her body. Paganini also has unusual scars on her face, her hips, and sides which have discolored her fur from black to white....you can really see that on her nose. If that all isn't bad enough, Paganini also tested positive for Heartworm infection when she arrived, for which she has completed treatment. So not only did Paganini suffer neglect by her owners, so did her puppies that were born in the dirt and lived outside with her.

DPU - How did you learn about her.....did you notice her driving by, or did someone tell you about her??  I'm really seeking suggestions and guidance.  I would relaly like to get involved in rescuing chained dogs somehow.  Growing up we had a chained Beagle, Tippie, who had pups at one point - don't know what happened to the pups. I loved Tippie, but she was always on that chain, in Michigan, in the summer heat and winter snow and cold.  She was fed and watered and had a dog house, but as a small child I didn't know how wrong it was.  To this day I don't know what ever became of her and I don't speak to my family, so I probably never will.  My grandparents also had a Beagle who rarely had human contact and ate table scraps. Again, I was a kid and didn't know any better. I regret that I didn't. It makes me sad and angry. I also know that it was along time ago and awareness has grown greatly since then - even though there are so many ignorant people out there.....which is why I want to get involved, because I love dogs and want to do what I can.

There is a site, Dogs Deserve Better--I think you will LOVE it.  Check it out.

And, yes, Willow was chained so if I can be of any help, please let me know

    Yes

One was from family and with them I just pestered them to death, showing up at their house two or three times a week with food and treats and bones and making a huge fuss over the fact that he had no water and no place to sleep and I shamed them into giving him up to me. I took him to Colorado to a GSD rescue up there.

Another was from someone in the  neighborhooda and with that one I just lied. I told them that I loved their dog and wanted to buy it. It took a few weeks of stopping by while on a walk knocking to tell them i had brought a bone for their dog  and that I really really wanted him and they finaly got tired of seeing me. I fostered him for a bit and rehomed him.

Alas I have a new neighbor now on the corner who has a cute little golden retreriver that is chained in the backyard, his house is one of those plastic airline kennels and I have not once seen anyone out playing with him or taking him into the house. I am now trying to figure out how to handle this one as it is driving me nuts to see that poor dog staked in the backyard every day.

I went to that site. All the stories are sad but I started bawling my eyes out reading Tundra's story.

I dont keep Lillie chained 24/7 but she is chained to a 100ft trolley for a couple hours a day until JJ wakes up so he can watch Samantha.

But after reading these stories I am no longer going to chain her. When he gets home tomorrow I am insisting he cash in his stocks so we can put up a fence now.

Yes, that site shows the realities of how some dogs have to live.  But you know, once they are rescued, they are so grateful and become so affectionate and attached to you.  To my fosters, Marvin, Molson, Paganini, and Lexi....so glad you are with me and I promise your future will be good...I will see to it.

Paganini is part chow and we think retriever mix.  Her coat was in such bad shape when I got her and now it looks like a mink coat.  Heres a picture soon after I first got her.  She is considered dog aggressive and yes she is.

I was recently told about that site and it has inspired me even more to get involved in the plight of these poor dogs.  It's all about awareness.  Paganinni is beautiful.......what became of her puppies?

Dgriego, I hope you are able to figure out a way to help the golden retreiver.......please keep us posted!

Kle1986 - kudos to you for making the decision to unchain Lillie!  She is gorgeous!

It's one thing to chain your dog out under a shade tree in a nice grassy, red ant free area for 15 - 20 minutes if you don't have a fenced yard and they enjoy it, but the horrors that I've seen online just outrage me!!!!!
