I started by getting trained at the local Humane Society. I am trained for Adoption Assistance, Dog Walking, and dog kennel stuff (I don't go in the cattery b/c you can't do both animals and I don't do the puppy quarantine room b/c you cannot do puppies and adult dogs at the same time). I used to walk/train the dogs once or twice a week for 2 hours at a time. I haven't gone in a while b/c I work until 5 during the year (4:30 in the summer), it's a 1/2 hr drive to the shelter, but now there is massive construction on that highway plus all the snow, by the time we get there it's pitch black outside and we only have less than an hour. I'll start again once it's worth the time it takes to get there. I wish they had later hours for volunteers!
I also watch the German Shepherd board very closely for transports, but I'm in kind of a weird spot b/c Michigan sticks out above the rest of the country and most transports are cross-country or southeast to northeast. I've never had the chance to volunteer for transport and probably won't until a dog needs to go specifically across or up Michigan (Glenda if you ever need a transport up/down you PM me). I would if I was needed!!!
I am on the listserv for the Michigan German Shepherd Rescue and have met the president several times so I take a look at every posting in case I think of a way to help.
Someday I would love to be more heavily involved in rescue. I have a degree in business communications and I love web design so I enjoy doing more of the communications and coordinating the people. If I have a large property I would gladly foster.
