Hording

    Hording

    Hi, I was just curious...

What would be the difference between owning a lot of animals, and hording?
I am a huge animal lover, and I have always known that when I get a place of my own I want to be surrounded by these furry 4 legged sweethearts. However, I have been worried that I may unfortunately put myself in a hording position.

There is another thread about this very subject, I think it was in advocacy, I'll see if I can find it.  It had some good studies and web pages about it.  If you look under hoArding you probably can find it.  I think the general consenus is if you take on more then you can care for or if you take on many to treat your own mental illness.

The ASPCA had to save a bunch of puppies and dogs on the latest episode of Aminal Precinct from a hoarder.  They let him keep a few dogs, the ones who they thought wouldn't do well in another home.  In this old man's case, there was poop all over the floor and the conditions for these pups were not very good.

    There ya go!

I think, as long as you con provide proper medical and physical care for your animals, it is fine. There is a fine line that you cross when things get out of control. When you say, oh, it's just one more, I think I can handle it. VS. I KNOW I can handle it. You have to know your own limit. I think fostering is a great way to "fill your need" for more animals, and a great way to help out. I have 1 dog and 4 cats. That is my limit as of right now. One day, I would love to own another dog, or maybe even two!, but right now, I cannot take on more than that, permemntly. So I foster, dogs and cats.

I'm sure there's probably a medical/psychiatric definition but to me it seems that if you have more animals than you can provide proper care for, you're probably a "hoarder" as in, you'd rather keep them with you and have them suffer than to put the animals' needs above your own and give it to someone (or organization) that can properly provide for it.
