    BSL Defeated-IA

    Iowa Proposed BSL Defeated

Hooray! Disturbing to read some of the discussion on "breed experts" and DNA testing for breed tho.

At least they realized that they don't know enough.

Also, I wonder how they get the stat that PBs are responsible for 70 % of all attacks when they are a miniscule percentage of all dog breeds owned. Unless they are counting dogs in dog-fighting businesses, which is an unfair and inaccurate inclusion of data. Which, again, brings the dog bite problem back to humans, not the dogs.

I worry about the DNA thing, too.  One of the arguments against BSL has been the inability of witnesses to recognize what is or is not a PB.  DNA tests rule that out.  However, they put many dogs with PB ancestry, but which display none of the behavioral characteristics of the breed on a fast track to the dead bin.  That's not any more ok than it is to discriminate against a "law abiding" dog solely on the basis of breed.   This really is a human problem, not a dog problem.  I just got a call to do a behavior consult on a dog that weighs less than 15 pounds, but still managed to put a bite in someone's lip that got them 4 stitches.  (The dog has been biting since puppyhood and is now 4 years old.  Seems like mandatory training, and regulation of puppy mills, would be better than mandatory "can't have your breed of choice".

I think is at least ONE DNA co that has refused to include PB's in their collection of breeds they ID, for that reason. I applaud them.

Wow....I so misunderstood what BSL stood for Embarrassed I thought it meant Bull-*hit Laws.....I didn't realize until this thread it meant Breed Specific Legislation.  Oops Huh?
