So how come we have not mentioned anything about Ellen D and Rescue

I did see a thread here talking about that but no names were mentioned. I have never seen her show and did not know that the thread was talking about her.

 Celebreties often make the very worst examples. Look at Britney Spears, she has a new tiny dog about every 6 months, what happens to them once they are no longer puppies?

Mrv, there was one exclusive thread in General Discussion and another was intermingled in a separate thread.  Surprisingly, there were folks here that sided with Ellen D.  I had heard this morning that the shelter is receiving death threats and they issued a statement saying they stand by their action and will not be intimated by Ellen D's fans. 

I fully support the shelter's action.

She violated the contract......I am not impressed with her performance.....I think, she probably pumped it for all she could.......

 I do not side with Ellen that is for sure, but I do think the shelter should have at the least looked into the home the dog was in, and if it was suitable they should have left the dog there and gone after Ellen for violating the contract.

 I admit I have yet to read this story myself so perhaps they did look into the home and decided it was not in the best intrests of the dog to remain there.

I have heard that the shelter did look into the home and that the dog had been tested and had not done well previously with children so the rescue thought it was the best intrest of all involved to place the dog in a home without children. Yes, Gina she did put on a good act didn't she! IMO she did read the contract and thought because she was a celeb she could get away with it....and those two women had to close their rescue and are now receiving death threats.....The attorneys for the shelter said that Ellen is sitting on her yacht sipping champagne and getting on with life while these two women are getting death threats and can't even leave their homes....not to mention all of the good they are missing out on doing because of all of this! It['s just crap!!

Ellen and partner Portia rescued a pup. The rescue had Portia sign the papers. The rescue waived the application process and the home vist. The rescue adopted an un altered pup. Ellen then had pup altered and paid a trainer to work with him as pup hated Ellen's cats.  When it didn't work out Ellen's friend and hairdresser was given the dog for her and the 2 kids age 13 and up. The rescue never changed the microchip information on pup. When rescue found out pup had been rehomed they demanded the new home fill out an application and have a home visit. The Hairdresser refused. After a 3 hour stand off with police the dog was surendered. ... since as far as paper goes dog belonged to them.  Ellen called and apologized offering to do anything to make things right. she went on show very upset and explained what had happened  then asked them to punish her noth the kid and pup. The Nation of fans went nuts.  Some weirdos called in threats. Ellen refused to discuss it any more on her show. The state of California found that Mutts and Moms rescue had some "issues" including thier tax status not being in effect, and the head quarters being out of state. It has been mentioned by several people that they only rescue puppies and pregnant dogs. Thereby charging for easily placed dogs and rescuing a single dog but getting many placement fees by whelping that dog.  Before the dog had been out of the hairdresser's home 2 days it was re-homed.    Ellen has found and rescued 3 dogs now, all have been re-homed (or 1 returned to the rescue when unable to train that  dog to get along with her cats.)  No one had discussed the return to rescue portion of the placement contract with either Ellen or Portia and they both offered to make it up to the rescue group. rescue group issued a brief statement that explained they never placed with families who had children under 14 !!

I work in rescue but I am sick and tired of people saying it is the maen old snotty celebrity who is at fault.   That Ellen expected to do what she wanted etc.    THEY didn't stick to thier own protocals, they broke thier own rules and then they broke a child and pup's heart.  Shame on them.

I know I'm a few days late, however I wanted to add a comment to this.  Ellen has done this before.  There are 7 documented cases of her adoting an animal and giving it away, that's documented I wonder if there are any that weren't documented. 

I guess I was just wondering why I had been sooooo out of the loop.  Then I realized the intent behind the original thread title.  Basically a bad situation was made worse and unintended outcomes abound.....OH well.

I like how the Chicago Tribune use the Ellen D saga to highlight Chicago's success on reducing the number of strays being PTS.  In 1970 the number was 200,000 and today it is reported at 19,000. 

I have seen many references to the one Starfish and one boy story.  I am glad to be one of the "boys" and make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs.  So proud to be a rescuer.

I'm going to agree with Bonita on this one. But having said that, how hard can it be to check with a local shelter to find out if they have any small dogs that are good with cats?  Don't most shelters test dogs with cats along with kids and other dogs  before they adopt them out? I know ours  must because I see that in the paper all the time for animals that are up for adoption .... gets along with other dogs, needs to be an only pet, likes/doesn't like cats, great with kids, etc. Going that route would save her a lot of trouble, IMO.
