The recent allocations of Mike Vick's alleged "underground dog-fighting kingdom" have been blown way out of proportion and should be quickly forgotten. He is being accused of allowing dog fighting to take place on his property. As a result he has been barred from training camp, and will more than likely not be allowed to participate in the 2007 season.
Now, we can all agree that dog fighting is an in-humane blood sport, there’s no denying that. Unfortunately the media is taking a very biased approach on the issue in favor of PETA and similar organization who are out for Vick's blood. They have not taken the situation into full context.
When people picture dog fighting they might instinctively picture their own golden retriever or beagle being thrown into a pit and forced to fight to the death. This is not the case; the preferred dog of choice in the dog fighting syndicate is the pit bull. A very aggressive, medium size dog, that is not much more than teeth and jaws. For the past couple of years a growing number of counties have banned the ownership of pit bulls because of a large number of unprovoked attacks on humans and animals alike. This is not the dog’s fault, it's just what the dog instinctually does, opps, bad words that aren't allowed here removed up. As a result of the banning many pit bull owners have been forced to destroy (kill) their dogs so they can no longer be a threat to the community.
Now you might be saying to yourself there's a big difference between putting a dog to sleep and forcing it into a "two man enter, one man leaves" Thunderdome situation. The difference is, the pit bull is being "humanely" killed for simply being the animal that it is. Mike Vick, on the other hand, allows it to be the animal that it is, and as a result the animal has a chance of dying. The pit bull was put on this planet to be an overly aggressive, mean oppps, bad words that aren't allowed here removed apart as a result. The American male was put on this planet to make money and be entertained by sports, the more carnage, the better, in some cases. All Mike Vick did was create a union between the instinctual desires of the American male, and the pit-bull.
Blood sports have been around as long as people have been entertained. The Roman Coliseum was home to thousands of animal vs. animal and man vs. animal bouts, and they were looked at simply as money driven entertainment.
Who out there can honestly say they have never removed the little plastic divider in their beta fish aquarium and watched the little devils turn the water red. It's entertaining and cheap to replace. Inhumane? Not as inhumane as putting two brightly colored fish in the same tank divided only be an invisible wall, when they want nothing more from life than to tear each other apart.
This is getting long. To conclude: is it a horrible thing to watch two dogs go at each other until one of them is dead? Yes. But what causes this to happen. Sure Mike Vick may have starved, beaten and electricuted some of his dogs in order to develop his dog's skills, but that's only because he is a good business man, maybe a little cold and twisted, but a business man none the less, he wants to make as much money as a can. The actual killing instinct was provided by nature, and who are we do deny that.
Mike Vick is one of the greatest pieces of raw talent to ever grace the NFL, not allowing him to play because he allows mother nature to run its course is a crime all in its own.
