49 of 50 dogs from Michael Vicks are to be spared!

Only one of the 50 dogs that were dog fighting from Michael Vicks are going to be euthanized, the others are either going with families or santcuaries to help them re socialize!  I think this is great for the dogs, and I hope that they are able to live happy normal lives with families who will care for them.

I hope that they can be rehabilitated. I'm sure that the animal control people wouldn't place them if they thought it was a lost cause.

On a related note: I ran in to a guy at the dog park last week that has the sweetest pitbull. It was obvious she just had a litter so I asked about it. He had some long story about the owners breeding her but the pups didn't turn out the way they wanted so they didn't want the mom or the pups. He also explained that the pit ended up on his door step.

Now, there is a well known pit bull fighting ring in my area - it was partly busted up not too long ago. Reading between the lines it was pretty obvious to me that the people who had the female pit wanted fighting dogs. The pups and the mom weren't fighting quality so they put them out on the street. I couldn't help but think of the Vick case where they killed dogs that weren't fighting quality.

Thankfully this gentleman decided to keep the mom as she was a great dog. I got the impression though that he knew the people that were breeding the dog in the first place - he sort of danced around the story so I could tell that he wasn't being quite truthful but I didn't press the issue.

I sincerely hope they are doing this because the dogs are pretty close to stable, aside from minor issues...and not due to public outcry that they be "spared". There is a good reason many ex fighting dogs are not rehomed...and the breed does NOT need more statistics.

I also sincerely hope they are screening homes with a magnifying glass to weed out "do gooders' who want to "help" that have no idea how to deal with a dog that's been involved in dog fighting...

*sigh* I wish them all the best and I hope this turns out well for the breed as a whole.

I wonder who is in charge of the placements? "trained as police dogs"....are they serious? Sheesh...

I am wishing those dogs the best!  I am glad that they were not put down because of their breed and what they were used for.  The dogs cannot help that they ended up i at the wrong place, at the wrong time.  At least they are getting a second chance at life.

Actually, they do use pits as drug sniffing dogs.  http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/articles/popsicle.html

There has been so much negativity in this case that I am going to think positive on this one and trust the team that did the evaluations.  There are many eyes on this and I doubt they would let a dog through that was questionable if only for liability's sake.  There was a dog fighting ring broken up in a town not far from us and they were able to successfully place many of the dogs with less resources than were available here.

Here's to a good outcome, responsible placements for all.... Beer

I agree with you here Gina.

The police work that they do with pitties is not protection oriented, it's in scent discrimination and SAR work.  As you know it helps to have a "drivey" dog to train, and the Boudreaux line of pits is nothing if not drivey.

any guesses on who gets his "reparation' monies? That's what's truly sad...he will give his $$ to an entity that wants to exterminate the breed he abused. In fact...they've probably killed more dogs than he has. Sad.

He should be forced to pay for the cost of evaluating, feeding, and boarding all 50 of the dogs that they seized from his property, as well as be forced to give money to pit bull rescue groups.

I just e-mailed a friend, who was part of the team that got the dogs a chance to be evaluated instead of put down right away. If I get any more info on where they went (Best Friends, Spindletop, etc.) I will post for everyone.

The last time I talked to her, the plan was to get the dogs to sanctuaries so they could decompress, and then to evaluate them in a few months time. I don't think that means 40 will be placed in homes/police work/etc.

Having done PB rescue in VA, I am curious who was on the evaluation team. There are some great people, and some less-than-great people.
