Maybe you could add the chow too?  They are extremely discriminated against and already banned in some parts of the state I live in, it's scary.

Wow, that is such a wonderful idea. I hope you the best in getting this web site going. I don't have any bullie breeds myself but I've worked with so many and they truly are sweathears.

You may feel pit bulls are being unfairly bullied by uninformed sources but here's something to ponder:  Why is it so many bullies own pit bulls...?  Surely, a good percentage of PB owners are responsible but it's undeniable many PB owners obtain them for all the wrong reasons....  Is it coincidence that so many reported--and reported on--dog related deaths involve pits...?  I think not....  That's not saying pits are solely the problem--any dog, so disposed, can inflict harm on humans...still, my Italian Greyhound, were he to "snap" and attack someone, might draw a little blood but that's about it....  A surley pb is probably as likely to kill as not kill...therein lies the problem....

Here, in Southern CA, pb trained for other than pet duty are common sights...OK, your's isn't one of them....  Here's another question for you to ponder:  Were you to encounter a pit with bad intentions, what would you think, then...?

This is no different than piites or dobbiesor german shepherds in the past.  You get little men who want to wear their manhood at the end of a leash and people who want a "tough looking" dog who abuse and mistrain the flavor of the month.  This "month" it happens to be bullies.  Where I live, it's "tough and cool" to own a wolf or wolf mix, even tho it's against the law.

The trainer at the HS was recently injured by a chi mix who decided to take her face off, pretty badly injured actually.  By a CHI mix...not much bigger than a hampster.  ANY dog can do tremendous damage if provoked or mistrained, or not trained at all.  I personally have never met a pittie that isn't a sweetheart, but then maybe I'm just too dumb to be afraid of a dog based on their breed and go more with their attitude and body language.  The only time in my life I was bitten it was by a "trained guard dog gsd"...and now I own 6 shepherds.  I can walk among them with raw heart without fear.

Lets please stop clumping breeds together and deciding that they are ALL bad, or more bad than good.  Bottom line is the owners and the breeders....a poorly bred chi is just as dangerous as any other poorly bred dog.

i think that was the best post i have ever seen written.

it is against the law here to own a wolf or wolf mix as well.

Well thank you.  Maybe I should post more often when I haven't had enough coffee! [:D]

holdeninpdx there is quite a few "pit bull" attacks on the news nowadays but from what I have found by doing a TON of research is that a lot of the "pit bull" attacks are not pit bull attacks at all.  A lot of those attacks are pit bull crosses (bred and sold by your average BYB) or dogs that have absolutely no pit bull in them at all.  These people that report attacks don't have a clue when it comes to breeds.  A black and white medium sized long haired dog that attacked was mistaken for a pit bull and reported as one.  I think the problem is that "pit bull" has been deemed a generic term for any dog that attacks by a lot of reporters.

And why even talk about your Italian Greyhound that if it bit it would just draw a little blood.  Any dog that attacks whether it be big or small, can do little or great injury is no better or worse than another.  The problem has nothing to do with breeds of dogs or dogs in general but has EVERYTHING to do with the people that own them.

If I were to encounter a Pit with bad intentions I would think "I feel sorry for this dog, what a horrible life he must live that he feels the need to attack people."

...and THAT makes my point...!  Until there are no more human bullies (alas, not likely), dangerous dogs will exist....  I only mentioned my iggy to make a point, as he wouldn't hurt a fly, AND no self-respecting bully (an oxymoron, I know) would obtain such a dog to train to harm or intimidate people.

This issue, it seems to me, closely resembles the handgun debate raging in America....  Clearly, handguns don't kill people...bad people with handguns kill people.  That said, a main difference between the potential of a handgun killing and a bullie maiming or killing is the bullie COULD (and has) act(ed) independently to kill/maim....

I am a staunch defender of Americans' rights to bear arms and even more concerned that laws on the books aren't enforced--were they, the gun debate would be moot....  The debate over bullies might be moot were there laws--and strict enforcement of those laws--pertaining to the bad apples who abuse dogs and train them to intimidate/harm others....

The fact you stated you, too, have seen such dogs illustrates the point.  These dogs are dangerous, regardless of the reasons for their dangerousness....  The Chihuahua you mentioned is an exception to the rule--and you know it.  If you really want to improve the chances of RESPONSIBLE owners to keep potentially dangerous breeds, go after irresponsible owners with a vengence!  Until there are laws regarding bullies and adequate methods of enforcing them, your battle will continue being an uphill one.

    Same.
It's not the dogs fault for being owned by a bad dog owner.
