Dublin City Council Ban on 'Dangerous Dogs'

Hi from Ireland.  Below is a quote referring to a ban that Dublin City Council are planning to introduce regarding so called 'dangerous dogs'

"Dublin City Council is to introduce a ban on eleven breeds of dog from properties including houses, flats and estates, with immediate effect.
The breeds are: English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Doberman, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Japanese Akita, Bull Mastiff, Japanese Tosa and Bandog. Cross-breeds of these dogs or crosses of these dogs with any other breed are also banned.
Owners will be given the opportunity to rehouse the dogs but if alternative accommodation cannot be found for they will be destroyed.
The council has taken the step to remove all "dangerous breeds" due to the increasing numbers of complaints from tenants and because of the legal implications associated with an attack taking place on one of its properties.
The ban initially applies to council housing and all public areas within council estates."

Isn't this the craziest thing that you have ever heard.  To think that they feel they can just take away beloved family pets due to the iresponsibilty of some owners who fail to train and socialise their dogs correctly. Instead of targeting the real problem i.e the owners through enforcement of legislation they are targeting innocent animals and punishing responsible owners. I know most of you on this website are in the US but the more people know about this the better.
If you feel like you would like to help out and as a fellow dog lover make your opinion known then go to [linkhttp://www.irishdogs.ie/Forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=1]http://www.irishdogs.ie/Forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=1[/link]
and read some of the posts there and post to show your support. Or better still send an email to those who are proposing this legislation, you will find the addresses on the above site.

This is insanity and we have to stop the persecution of certain breeds due to ignorance and lack of understanding.

Woah and that is a LOT of breeds--way more than you find in most U.S. BSL (which tends to just focus on bully breeds). If they're going to open it up to dogs that just look like they might be mixes of those breeds, that's pretty much every dog ever.

Is this just for public housing, or for everywhere in the entire city?

It's just for public housing at the moment and if you own a private house on a council estate you can't  own one of these breeds either. They want the ban to eventually cover public parks as well. And some councillors have mentioned that they hope it is the beginning of a nationwide ban on these breeds.

These lists make no sense.  Even if BSL did make a lick of sense (which it does not), what's the deal with these lists?  You can have a Malinois or Dutch Shepherd, but not a German Shepherd?  You can have an AmStaff, but not a Pit Bull?  What if you're blind and your seeing-eye is a German Shepherd or a Doberman?

PS.  What is the difference between housing in general and public housing?

if you own a private house on a council estate

I saw this on another e-mail list and there were some of us that had a question.  What is a council estate?  Is that like publically owned lands?

A Council Estate is housing that is owned by the government specifically for people with a lower income, or single parent families. The tenants would pay rent but it would nowhere near as high as the average rent in an area.

Whoa--ridgies too?  Yikes.  Stuff like this should be a heads up to all dog owners.
