    Banning pit bull terriers in the city was among the proposals discussed today at a meeting between health district officials and members of City Council and county Commissioners Court.
    .
    .
    .
    The idea of banning pit bull terriers came from Jesse Miller, who runs a nonprofit animal rescue service and shelter.
    Bred to fight, pit bulls have been involved in deadly attacks on pets and people.
    "We have a serious pit bull problem in this community," Miller said, "and it's going to take a couple more kids to get killed ... before you say, 'You know what? We've got to do something."
    "Pit bulls ... are associated with drug dealers and gang members. People that have pit bulls in our community shouldn't have them."

    Asked if the city could ban pit bulls, Robert Galvan, director of the City-County Health and Advisory District, said it can and that he would support it.

    Beats me Gina,

    Here is some more information from the news article.

    Asked if the city could ban pit bulls, Galvan said it can and that he would support it.
    "As a home rule city, you can pass any ordinance you want until it is challenged in court," Galvan said.
    While the city could impose such a ban, county government does not have he authority to do so in unincorporated areas.

    Here it is...from the Texas state Statutes....
    ========================================================================================

    "§ 822.047. LOCAL REGULATION OF DANGEROUS DOGS.  A county
    or municipality may place additional requirements or restrictions
    on dangerous dogs if the requirements or restrictions:
    (1)  are not specific to one breed or several breeds of
    dogs;
      and
    (2)  are more stringent than restrictions provided by
    this subchapter.

    Added by Acts 1991, 72nd Leg., ch. 916, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1991"

    It's many times interestng living in Texas having been born and raised in California....but one thing I do like is that seldom can you easily remove a man's rights to his gun, his dog, or his pickup truck. Two of those I could care less about...but I'll side with them to keep the third! I definitely chose a better state to own dogs in, that's for sure!
