Tips for convicing a dog's owner to spay

If you've read my introduction post long ago you know about my part time dog, Casey.  Her owners are quite irresponsilbe and it's upsetting.  Casey gets out of the house frequently as they're not careful when leaving the house with little miss escape artist and resfuse to put in the time for training.  I'm doing the best I can with her not being my dog and not being a great trainer in that area.  However this post is about how they also refuse to spay her.  They complain about how she's so hyper and that when she's in heat they say how she's such a pain and makes a big  mess (as should be expected Angry) yet they refuse to spay her!  I've talked to the adult owners on more the one occasion even offering to help find and recently even help pay for her to be spayed.  Recently the dad said he won't do it because he now wants to breed Casey so they can have puppies!  They can't stand her and now they want to breed her?  I'd hate see her be the victim of backyard breeding.  She's such a sweet heart and deserves owners who will take care of her.  On the list of many reasons to spay partiuclary Casey is her escape attempts nearly every day and the fact she loves going to the park though I have to watch her so carefully because she's intact and the only reason she's allowed to go is because she responds without hesitation when I call her she comes right to me though never does that with her oweners.  I've talked about the medical advantages of spaying (reducing the risk of certain illnesses) and I've talked about the behavorial advantages of spaying as well but still no luck.  I've run out of ideas and i'm hoping someone here will have some tips to help poor little Casey.

Personally I'd just take her, spay her and give her to a rescue for Min Pins.
If the owners ask..."I saw her and then she ran off.."

That's what I was thinking! Poor dog...

Sometimes, there's just no dealing with ignorant people who want to remain that way.
Maybe if you gave them information on how much a caesarian section and followup care costs for a small dog with too big puppies, they will think it is cheaper to spay her....but, since they already seem pretty stupid, I doubt it. [:@]

i hate people who don't believe in spaying or neutering. One of my husbands friends has a backyard pitbull. He used to be an inside puppy but grew big and they just tossed him outside. They complain he humps everything so they "have to" keep him outside.

I have had the neuter/spay talk with him tons of times. The first couple  of times he said it was cruel. Now he says it will make his dog a sissy. About a month age he came up with a stupid idea, he decided to bread it.

He can't even take care of one, why does he want more. He "believes" he can make tons of money by breeding, but he has no clue how. i am tired of fighting with him over it.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to change his mind.

Wow, I didn't know you had it in you.......[8D][:D]

Some people might say that is a little radical.[8|]

Stealing the dog, IMO, is deplorable.

In this situation, I DO agree the dog should be spayed. However, all you can do is show them evidence to support your opinion. If they refuse, then perhaps you could educate them a bit on breeding. It is better to befriend and assist than to anger and be shut out completely.

Not to mention that dogs are considered property and you can go to jail for stealing one, same as if you stole their car.

You are fighting a losing battle.  I tried to befriend my new neighbors (we have lots of coyotes here and they leave a tiny long haired doxie out in the yard barking for hours - someday, he will attract the attention of a predator, or someone with poisoned meat - neither of which I want around my house).  I gave them info on the training center where I work, a pamphlet on barking, a bit of local knowledge about the coyote population, and what did they do?  Nada, zip, zilch.  And, one day, when my BF didn't get off the phone fast enough to go get my hound, who started barking at the UPS guy, the neighbor yells over, "shut up".  I can't wait until his sticky fingered little brats come over here looking for lost baseballs.  I'm going to plant the side of the yard next to his in brambles, and put my beehives there. [:'(]  I would be willing to bet the little yapper isn't neutered either...
