    AKC and petland

Well it is true.  I am really torn at the moment.  Not sure what my long term choice will be.  Are anyone's breed clubs reacting yet?
    • Gold Top Dog
My parent club is in conference with it right now. I'm sure you already know my thoughts.

I am working with the BMDC to get Am Staffs recognized for drafting and their delegate copied me on what is going on with the delegates. From what he said it was very strongly opposed at the meeting

Wow,,,,,,,,,,,I just read about this on another forum.    This is what I read today:

Please read the following two emails, both may be forwarded. The AKC is viewed by many ordinary citizens as a lobbying leader and a class act in support of good health and breeding practices, and is long associated with dog fanciers who breed only for the betterment of the breed. Over the last several years, the AKC has used the public's perception to increasingly line their pockets with product endorsements. Is this behavior becoming for a 501c3 non-profit corporation? No more. The AKC is nothing more than a registry, and this week, even that has lost its starch. The American Kennel Club has entered into a contract allowing Petland employees to register puppies online at the time of purchase. I'll post more as it becomes available, and believe me, it will.

Please write your local breed club or kennel club and ask how you can protest this.

I have much more that was written including the AKC answers,,,don't want to make this too long.  I belong to a Dane board of mostly breeders and showers, and there has been nothing about the AKC that I have read there that would make me want to have my dog registered with them. This is the final blow.

HHHHHmnmmmmm   so,,, as I am reading all of this,,,a response from Dave Roberts, Customer Service....with permission to cross post from original poster, here is one question:

Due to the AKC's statement about their contract with Petland, I called and
sent an email to the head of Customer Relations.  He responded that day and
so here I include my email and his response.  For anyone on this list who is
on other lists, please feel free to cross post.  Caution:  this is a long
post.  And without a doubt, they are justifying their decision.  Too bad.

[color=#0000cc]What else is being done to promote AKC Registration?

We are less than a year into a five year strategic plan that has already
introduced a suite of benefits and resources for the fancy including a
breeder newsletter, full litter registration option, litter coupons, online
accounts and enhancements to online dog registration.  In addition, AKC has
introduced new registration benefits like dog.com e-certificates for both
breeders and individual registrants and complimentary first office visits at
participating veterinarians.  As we continue implementing the plan,
additional programs for breeders and new dog owners will be introduced. We
have made a significant investment in a diversified advertising campaign
that communicates our mission and promotes the value of AKC registration and
the integrity of our Registry.  Our message embodied in our advertising
tagline "We're more than champion dogs. We're the dog's champion" has
reached almost 200 million people in print and broadcast media during the
    past year.

    Gee,,,would this be our dog.com???????

Oh it gets better...AKC is now asking millers to "come back into the fold"...and all those idiot breeders who support PAWS and AKC's stand on it NOW have a clear pic of why AKC supported it.

The real money for AKC is not in events...it is in registrations. Reputable breeders are now breeding LESS and registering FEWER pups yearly...if PAWS passes those breeding less than 25 pups per annum will be more and more regulated while those above will have the same old USDA regs...those numbers will drop. Miller numbers, now that the AKC stamp of approval is on their "product" can now sell to Petland under the umbrella of AKC...they breed more, and now...register more...guess who the AKC is really seeking to lie down with?

    I see...said the blind man!

I have just read and signed the petition: "American Kennel Club Rescinding Petland Agreement" Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. Please sign here: [linkhttp://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/560119335]http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/560119335[/link]

I just picked this up from another forum!  Finally GOOD NEWS!
At the September Delegates Meeting AKC reported that we had reached an
agreement with Petland in order to facilitate the registration of dogs that
    are already AKC registrable.

AKC's Board of  Directors and management believed that this agreement would
have helped to  further the mission of the AKC. Promoting responsible dog
ownership to new  puppy owners, implementing our care and conditions
policies, and exposing  more dog owners to AKC educational programs and
services would have had even  greater reach.

In the past few weeks we have received many comments about  this agreement,
both positive and negative. We have listened to the concerns  and because
this issue has become so divisive, we believe it is in the best  interest of
our sport and the American Kennel Club not to go forward with  this
    initiative.

I'm glad to read this. Otherwise, AKC papers would not be worth the paper they are printed on. I don't think the AKC should align themselves with any one breeder, and certainly never with a retail pet outlet which must, by the mechanics of retail merchandising, use puppy mills. So, therefore, I don't think the AKC should align with any puppy mill or anyone associated with a puppy mill. If money is a problem, simply raise the fees. If the price of bread can go up, so can the AKC fees. I'd much prefer that to a lowering of ethics symbolized by partnering with a mill.

    I agree Ron.
