Does anyone have an accurate number regarding the number of dogs (and cats) that are euthanized every year in the US.
All the numbers I have seen are different - with the Humane Society saying now 2.7 million annually in this link (about 1 animal every 11 seconds) down from 3-4 million a few years ago.

I also read elsewhere that the numbers used to be much greater 30 years ago. I would like to know if the situation is improving.
Another post said "In the U.S., more than 10 million animals are killed annually in pounds and shelters. In Michigan alone, the annual figure is about 500,000"

I live in LA and almost nobody will attest to having bought a dog anymore. It's considered wrong given how many great animals there are in shelters.
