burning fleas to death?

    burning fleas to death?

We suddenly had to have a dog put down last month (and we are still taking care of 2 other, older dogs). We thought it best to have the body cremated. A day later I saw that I had a large bite, apparently from a flea in the vet hospital (our dog did not have fleas). But it started me thinking, to the point where I would not choose cremation next time. Are fleas slowly burned to death during the cremation? Is the price we pay for an apparently good way of saying goodbye that we torture other animals which are usually considered pests? And that started me thinking about other pests, such as ticks, mites, heartworms, tapeworms, and eggs or larvae which have no chance of escaping. I have resolved to pursue this issue, first by finding a technically realistic solution, one that would reasonably easy for a crematory to perform without being a burden, and enforceable. Possibly I would try to get a law passed (Massachusetts), but want to do this in a constructive way, without bringing ridicule and hate upon the animal-lovers movement. I know I will not be popular, maybe even within my own family. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This puts me in mind of those people who diligently sweep the path in front of them so that they don't tread on any tiny little critters.  Maybe admirable, but not for the likes of every person to worry about... There is too much else going on in the world and in our own lives.

    methinks I smell a troll

    That's for sure.

Oh don't.  I was hoping it was one of those monk type peoples!

Anyway, fleas don't LIVE on dogs.  They just hop on for lunch.  If there are fleas on an animal when it dies, they jump off.  Gross but true. Like rats leaving a sinking ship.  So, you can save your concern for the tapeworms and heartworms and other gross internal pests, (that probably die in horrible ways when we treat the dog for them...).

I fail to see how the cry "Save the Tapeworms!" will attract anythhing but ridicule, so if it ISN'T a troll/joke.... they will need a lot of luck and a very good marketing team...

This is almost too bizarre to merit a reply but here goes.  The fleas and ticks on a dead animal leave within a few minutes of death.  The internal parasites will die if the animal is buried because their host is dead.  Why not concentrate your efforts on something that will actually help a sentient being?

There's always going to be something "alive" on an animal, alive or dead.  If it's not fleas, it's another parasite, bacteria, or organisms that show up within minutes of death as part of decomp.

Ditto.  On all counts.  Common sense, people.  Trolling for reactions isn't a good use of your time, the forum members' time, or us Mods/Admins, either.... be forewarned.

Not a troll, I assure you. As I said (and as shown by other replies here) many will say I am over-reacting. But pain is pain. I am surprised (pleasantly, if that is the correct word) that ASPCA pleads against things like sticky flypaper strips, because they believe that even "pests" deserve not to be tortured to death, if possible.

Oops! This is my first day here. Based on experience with long-ago newsgroups, I though REPLY would be sent as an individual email to the previous poster.

Ok.  Maybe its because i'm new around here and im not used to the lingo (or maybe im just not that computer saavy), but.. WHAT is a troll? and trolling??

bopper - do you realize how many other things you could have done with your time while you were pondering this?  such as... checking your other pets to make sure that you didn't bring any other little flea friends home from the vet, that could have hopped onto them.  just sayin'.

Does giving my dog a bath with flea shampoo (or any other kind of flea treatment actually) constitute flea torture?  Indifferent

bopper have you ever tried to kill a flea?  I have, and after I tried to squish it, it stood up and jumped a foot into the air.  They are REALLY HARD to kill (like ticks).  When you put on flea shampoo and other repellents, they jump off, not die.  When the animal dies, the flea hops off, so no you aren't burning them (but you are probably burning other parasites that hop on to a dead thing).

This thread is really odd, but I will admit that when I flea bombed my house (which mind you does NOT cause "pain", it interrupts the life cycle of flea larva, so they just never hatch) I found all these pill bugs and millipedes dead along the base boards and was a little sad that the bomb kills all those bugs too (but I wasn't sad for the spiders, sorry!).

Call me heartless, but I'm never going to fret over the death of an insect invading my home or, doG forbid, my dogs.

    I *heart* my exterminator. Cool

So if your dogs ever get fleas, what you are just going to leave them there so they aren't killed???  ?????
