There's no hope for Allen Park, MI. This is the response I got

 Despite the fact you act like you know exactly what "breed" is a problem in the Allen Park community, I just wanted to let you know that Allen Park decided against the ban just today for many reasons.

That is good news.  Apparently you missed the part of my posts in which I stated that I do not support the banning of any breed!  I did not claim to "know" what breed is the problem in Allen Park MI because, like you, I do not live in Allen Park.  My point has been that the city council should listen to the people that they represent (not people from outside their town) and do  what their community believes is best.  That appears to be what they did in this case.

I haven't read through this thread entirely...but, I just had a quick question, why did you emphasise Labradors in caps?

 Not to speak for the OP, but I'm guessing it's because they're commonly regarded as such great, even-tempered dogs and yet, in this community they had a higher bite incidence than pits, who were the target of the proposed BSL.  One of the worst dog attacks I've ever heard of in my area came at the hands of a family lab who literally ripped an 8 year old girl's face off.  So, I don't think you can legislate based on breed, any dog can bite.

Exactly. Any dog can bite, so I just don't see the point in capsing Labradors especially on a forum like this where (I believe) everyone on here has the knowledge that any dog can bite. Why not caps Rotties, Chows, and Shephards too? They're dogs just as much as Labs are.

It's like I often get this undertone on this forum like people have to make a point that Labs are aggressive even though they have a  family dog rep and pit bulls are great family dogs with an aggressive rep. ANY dog, ANY breed can become aggressive. Labs are so over populated, and anytime a breeds population explodes you're going to hear about bites, fights, etc.

 Yes, that is why I capitalized it...I wasn't trying to be "breedist" in any way.  You can't deny the fact that most people (when referring to Pit Bull situations) compare them to dogs like Labs.  Kyle himself said to me, "I can't believe Pit Bulls are taking up shelter space when better dogs like Labs need space."  And yes, you are right about any dog having the capability to bite.  One thing you have to remember is that "non-dog" people like Kyle Tertzag fail to realize this, so when they hear about Labs causing injury in the same situation as Pit Bulls they are very surprised.  I mean, even I was surprised to see labs higher up on their list than Pit Bulls!

Yeah, but I thought you replied to Marklf when emphasising Labrador, and they are a member on this forum (I could be mistaken). I think it's great you wrote in speaking out against banning a breed. But, I don't think you should have to put down another breed (IMO, emphasising a single breed is putting it down) to make an argument.

That is good news. And that is exactly one of the things I meant by tasking the humans, rather than the breed of dog. Enforcing owner laws. People with loose dogs, thug or not, get fined. That way, we don't have to worry about whether the owner is a thug with 14th amendment rights or a hapless regular owner who's dog got out. It doesn't matter, the dog is loose, the owner is fined.

And then, put thugs in jail, anyway.

The stats you mentioned are similar to others I have read before. Some years ago, the leading breed in bites was the Lab, followed by the Siberian Husky. Very few bites are from Pit Bulls but they get all the press.

Anyone here have their Pit Bull bite them? Shadow bit me once (totally stupid mistake on my part) and he doesn't have any Pit Bull in him. I think most people here know what his breed mix is. And I'm not scared. Just a human who learned better and tasked myself to learn better.

Honestly, I think you might be being a little oversensitive. I emphasize the fact that my lab-type mix is aggressive and my sister's pit bull is not all the time. I'm certainly not putting Cherokee down (and I'm definitely NOT blaming it on her breed...it was undoubtably her upbringing), nor am I putting Jaz on a pedestal or something, but yeah, since most people think of labs as super nice and pit bulls as evil terrors, it makes for a pretty good argument.

Rottweilers, shepherds, etc. have bad enough reps as it is without emphasizing their bite records.. Labs do not generally have bad reps, so I don't really see the issue. You know labs aren't generally aggressive, I know it, Papillion knows it... No one's insulting them, IMO.

And wow, I'm shocked that the Kyle guy turned his opinion around. I seriously almost puked reading his first letter. I couldn't even respond I was so nauseous and shaking, lol. But YAY at the no breed ban.
