    Getting involved in dog transport...

I have frequently thought of getting involved in helping dogs find their forever homes.  While I don't have the room to foster or the experience to help train I do feel that I could help my being part of a "dog railroad" to move dogs where they need to go.

I live just south of Minneapolis and don't mind doing the odd long drive (We often drive to Winnipeg, MB and back).

Can anyone advise me how and to whom I should offer my help, such as it is?

I know that so many of you work diligent hours and are dedicated to causes such as this.  I have to admit that I'm proud to know you (even just online) and feel bad that I can't do as much as you.  Perhaps this is just how I get started.

A lot of specific breed rescues need transport help. They typically have an email group and will send out emails to see who will fill certain legs of the transport. Also, dogs that are rescued for certain purposes will need transport help as well - such as herding dog rescues and so on.

I am part of ARPH - national aussie rescue and am getting my name on the volunteer to transport list too. I also just volunteered to help transport a potential disc dog from a shelter in west MI to canada. So, there's lots of need out there. I would start by just picking certain rescue groups and checking out their website then calling some reps and asking questions.

Check with your local rescue groups.....they have shorter transports, but, at times they have transports that take hours and they are always looking for help.....

I would use the national breed club sites to find the rescue links.  Contact the rescue folk identified and they will get you started.

I'm on the Aussie CUR list, too, but as was pointed out, most breed rescues have some kind of transport system.  If you have a particular breed you want to help, start with the national breed rescue and go from there.

ditto. i got on an email list that the lady we adopted amelia from sends out. requests for help with transports come through there fairly regularly.  most of the transports are fairly short, but there are some longer ones. plus all the transports they list come through our area.

I started by getting trained at the local Humane Society.  I am trained for Adoption Assistance, Dog Walking, and dog kennel stuff (I don't go in the cattery b/c you can't do both animals and I don't do the puppy quarantine room b/c you cannot do puppies and adult dogs at the same time).  I used to walk/train the dogs once or twice a week for 2 hours at a time.  I haven't gone in a while b/c I work until 5 during the year (4:30 in the summer), it's a 1/2 hr drive to the shelter, but now there is massive construction on that highway plus all the snow, by the time we get there it's pitch black outside and we only have less than an hour.  I'll start again once it's worth the time it takes to get there.  I wish they had later hours for volunteers!

I also watch the German Shepherd board very closely for transports, but I'm in kind of a weird spot b/c Michigan sticks out above the rest of the country and most transports are cross-country or southeast to northeast.  I've never had the chance to volunteer for transport and probably won't until a dog needs to go specifically across or up Michigan (Glenda if you ever need a transport up/down you PM me).  I would if I was needed!!!

I am on the listserv for the Michigan German Shepherd Rescue and have met the president several times so I take a look at every posting in case I think of a way to help.

Someday I would love to be more heavily involved in rescue.  I have a degree in business communications and I love web design so I enjoy doing more of the communications and coordinating the people.  If I have a large property I would gladly foster.

You can email sjack959@gmail.com. Her name is Sheri, she is in Minneapolis, she can probably start sending you any transport requests that go through there. She works w/an all breed rescue & I am not sure what breeds you would be asked to transport...But you only sign up if you want to.

    Thanks for helping!! Good luck.

    Hi,
This is big time activity for those in rescues. Mostly weekend volunteer work.   Depending on where you live, you may be requested to help a lot or you may have to be really quick to volunteer for a Leg.  I live in the general Chicago area and have a hard time getting Legs that pass through this area.  But here is a start.  There are both for hire transports and volunteer transports.  The for hire is sometimes just the reimbursement of gas.  A lot of times these transports criss-cross, overlap, and are in parallel.  Being in touch with multiple transport groups helps put together the transport plan.  Oh yeah, everything happens on the Thursday and Fridays before the transports, so if you are not flexible, then it may be a very frustrating experience.
