Stealing the dog, IMO, is deplorable.
In this situation, I DO agree the dog should be spayed. However, all you can do is show them evidence to support your opinion. If they refuse, then perhaps you could educate them a bit on breeding. It is better to befriend and assist than to anger and be shut out completely.
Not to mention that dogs are considered property and you can go to jail for stealing one, same as if you stole their car.
You are fighting a losing battle. I tried to befriend my new neighbors (we have lots of coyotes here and they leave a tiny long haired doxie out in the yard barking for hours - someday, he will attract the attention of a predator, or someone with poisoned meat - neither of which I want around my house). I gave them info on the training center where I work, a pamphlet on barking, a bit of local knowledge about the coyote population, and what did they do? Nada, zip, zilch. And, one day, when my BF didn't get off the phone fast enough to go get my hound, who started barking at the UPS guy, the neighbor yells over, "shut up". I can't wait until his sticky fingered little brats come over here looking for lost baseballs. I'm going to plant the side of the yard next to his in brambles, and put my beehives there. [:'(] I would be willing to bet the little yapper isn't neutered either...
