PETA and IAMS Pet Foods

• Gold Top Dog
The stunning methods in slaughter houses aren't very reliable. Many animals wake up during the slaughtering process, IMO , gasing would be a better idea.
• Gold Top Dog
gasing would be a better idea.

So there would be no point in organic or free range meat then, because gasing them would contaminate the meat with whatever they used. I respect the vegan movement, don't get me wrong, I'm a seventh-day-adventist so most people I know are at least vegetarian. I just won't push chemicals on people if they don't want them.
• Gold Top Dog
I understand your point, but I am concerned with the raising and slaughtering animals and the cruelty involved, the main reason I am a vegetarian.

You are concerned with gasing the animals, look at the feed and different chemicals that the animals are exposed to while being raised, and the different chemicals that go into the processing.

Wow,
I guess you people do know about this situation.  I just buy food at the store for my dog, unfortunately I live in a very small town with ONE OPTION...  Wal Mart...  Wal Mart doesn't carry many brands...  only the brands that are made CHEAP and sold CHEAP... so I guess the fact that they even carry IAMS says something about IAMS.... (probably trying to get IAMS to move to China as we speak so they can sell it cheaper.)

I do not understand why they have to TEST on Animals to begin with... Campbells Soup doesn't have a LAB where they feed small children nothing but SOUP and then cut off a huge hunk of their thigh to TEST what it does to them...  It doesn't make sense to me..  We know what DOGS and CATS need to be healthy...  all they have to do is make sure their product contains these elements and sell it...  I do not agree with ANY testing at all... Here is why...

If you told the LAB TECH that the product he/she was creating was going to be sprayed into THEIR eyes after the "formula" is completed...  you can bet there would be nothing harmful in it to test for....

So I guess I am going to have to start ordering my dog food online...  sigh..  what a pain in the butt....
It sounds to me like Newmans Own is probably the best option, seeing as, most of the profits from Newmans Own Brands goes to CHARITY...

Thanks for listing that, I might just switch from Canidae to a non-cruelty product.

If you must buy kibble, than I'd recommend Newman's own.

I would not recommend that dog food. While it's great that they don't use animal testing, the formula is extremely grain-heavy and my dog, who was eating it when I got him, did absolutely terribly on the stuff.

Here's their adult dog formula:
Chicken, Organic Barley, Organic Rice, Organic Milo, Organic Oats, Organic Ground Flax Seed, Chicken Meal, Organic Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (Naturally Stabilized with Mixed Tocopherols, Citric Acid and Rosemary), Organic Carrots, Organic Potatoes, Calcium Phosphate, Sea Salt, Potassium Chloride, Kelp, Parsley, Dehydrated Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dehydrated Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Product, Dehydrated Bifidobacterium Thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dehydrated Bifidobacterium Longum Fermentation Product, Dehydrated Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Zinc Amino Acid Complex (Source of Chelated Zinc), Choline Chloride, Iron Amino Acid Complex (Source of Chelated Iron), Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Amino Acid Complex (Source of Chelated Manganese), Copper Amino Acid Complex (Source of Chelated Copper), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Ascorbate, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Cobalt Proteinate (Source of Chelated Cobalt), Potassium Iodide, Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Sodium Selenite.

Aside from the grains, the Menadione (according to the Dog Food Project,
[linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione]http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione[/link], is bad news). I also am not a huge fan of salt added to foods. But my biggest complaint is just the large amounts of grains compared to meats in the recipe.

Thanks for that list of cruelty-free dog food companies. I'm definitely going to look into it. I also live kind of in the boonies right now, so I've been buying my dog food online. It's really not as much of a hassle as I'd thought it would be, though granted, I have a small dog who doesn't eat that much. I definitely think it's worth it to find a nutritious food that my dog enjoys.

Very good point, which is why I buy organic and free range. I applaud your convictions, I personally rarely eat meat as well (sometimes at a fancy resturant, but I pay for it later it makes me sick). If everyone was like you in Peta, I would doubt that their ridiculous terror tactics would happen :) Human lives are also important, even if you disagree with their beliefs.

Oh, believe me, terror tactics should not happen.
I mentioned this before, Peta has had some success in exposing terrible treatment of animals going through the slaughter process. The biggest shocker for me was when an undercover video appeared of a kosher slaughter plant, it was uncovered that in that particular plant the trachea was ripped out while the animals were bleeding out and were trying to stand up. The suffering of the animals was unbelievable, it took many minutes for the animal to die.

I am just curious, when you speak of free range and organic meat, where are the animals taken to be processed?

Yes, but remember they do things very different with Kosher meat, it's not a fair comparison.  I personally am not concerned as much with the slaughter process.  My first will always be the people before the animal.  There will always be instances where the process goes wrong, but I would ;prefer that to adding inappropriate chemicals to people.  People freak about phenobarb's possibility of being in dog food, you really want to add another heavy sedative to people food.  I definately would not.  The phenobarb levels that used to be found in pet food, were from a small ;proportion of the meat coming from animals given the phenobarb.  If you gassed all the chickens, or whatever, before slaughter, EVERY animal would have it in it's system and the levels would be much higher.  Any type of inhaled anesthetic is distributed in the fat, and takes a long time to be metabolized (which is why people feel weak and out of sorts for up to two weeks following surgery).  It would definately be present in significant amounts in the meat of any animal that was sedated with it prior to death.

Again, I think it's great if you believe that the process is wrong to not support it.  Trying to come up with alternative ways to do it is great too.  I think that's noble and more people should do it.  But ..... many people do not hold the same values that you or I do and their lives matter too.  Working to increase awareness and inform the public is the right thing to do, but so is allowing them to come to their own conclusions.  I don't always agree with the course my patients choose, but it is their life.  I try my best to guide them to what I think is best, or right, but who is to say who is right or best?  Discussions about we "shouldn't" eat meat or do animal research are neither here nor there in my mind because we as a society have decided we will allow it.  The discussions we should have are about how to make it more humane (without blowing up or terrorizing each other) which is all I was getting at and I think you were as well.

going out on a very lonely limb here...i feed my dog iams. i have had no problems with it. apparently berserker likes "the worst food" ever to be made, it is the only thing he will eat in healthy quantities, so thats what i feed him.

while i feed it, i would encourage you to look into higher quality dog food, they often come at the same price as iams. i highly doubt anyone can actually know how food is being tested, and every single ingredient. impossible. companies tell you what they want you to hear.

as for peta, they are a very corrupt organization, i would take everything they say with a grain of salt.
• Gold Top Dog
You might not like what Peta has to say, and in most part I think they are too extreme, but I simply can't believe all of it is fabricated and made up lies........they have taken videos to court, haven't heard of evidence getting booted out of court, because the judge felt the videos were fabricated.
