It depends on state and muncipality. In some places it's just flat illegal, but in others you need a permit and in yet others you can do whatever you want. Regardless, it's always a bad idea unless you're a zoologist with a wolf sanctuary.

I was going to say the same thing. For example, in Texas, wolf hybrids are not regulated. In Wyoming, though, it is illegal to breed and sell wolves or wolf hybrids. In other states, any canid over 50 percent requires a wild animal permit and is considered undomesticated. Even though dogs and wolves are close, genetically, there are some tempermental differences to make wolves very much not an ideal pet for the average pet owner. Either a lot of education or, better, direct experience with wolves should be a must. Really, this wolf should be surrendered to a habitat to determine if it's wild enough to survive on its own or will need special assistance. If the latter is the case, and I hate to say it, it would be better off in a zoo where it's meals would be provided, or live at a permanent wolf sanctuary.

Here in PA you have to have a permit from the state wildlife administration. Recently there was a woman who had several hybrids who she had registered as dogs and not gotten a permit for (though it was sort of an open secret that she had them). Over the summer, they mauled and ate her. She had been mating them and selling the puppies, too.

People seriously don't know that a wild animal living in a home isn't domesticated, it's just a wild animal living in captivity. Different things entirely. It's also why people also get monkeys as pets, which is just such a colassally bad idea that my mind just boggles every time I think about it. Two of the lions at our zoo here in Pittsburgh were confiscated from a private citizen. Sometimes, the stupid just burns.
