    Interesting

I am at work, and never log on to the forum while I am here, but I was so interested to hear your replies, I just couldn't wait.

What do you think about this article?  [linkhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12498847/]http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12498847/[/link]
This is the comment I found most interesting,

"We asked consumers to come in and create what we would call their ideal wet dog food,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, director of the Beneful brand. "The key thing we learned was just how many grains and vegetables they put on the plate. They really felt these types of ingredients were important for their dogs.”

I think there needs to be some MAJOR public education...I have learned soooo much since I started lurking/posting here.

I agree people do need some education in dog food nutrition maybe then people would relize what junk they are feeding their dogs and hopefully switch to better dog food. Since I joined here I have learned alot about nutrition and boy has it Blue changed so to a nicer coat, more weight, and all happy guy. I will never go back to what he was feeding on before we joined.

What I dont understand is why proper nutrition is not somehow more broadcasted to the pblic... Also, why dont the better companies advertise?

I think folks like Natura put their money into a better product and are content to grow slowly by word of mouth, while the giants like Purina and Pedigree, SD, etc, put the money that SHOULD be going into improving the food into advertising.  Advertising is so horrifically expensive.

Well, it makes more sense for the big companies to advertise instead of improving their formulas. If they start using better ingredients, that means all the waste from their human foods gets thrown away instead of used. So they aren't just paying for better ingredients, they're also paying for what they would have had for "free" in the first place. Opportunity cost of ditching their junk formulas is just too high.

The smaller brands have such a small customer base that they can either buy good ingredients or do advertising, and since the better ingredients is the area where they're safe and can continue to make money, that's the route they take. Believe me, as a retailer I wish everyone knew of Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, Prism, Fromm Four-Star, and Nature's Variety. It would make my life much easier. [sm=biggrin.gif]

Well, somehow, I think the public ought to be made aware of those foods... I would have NEVER known anything if I hadnt found this place.... thats sad really because TONS of people wont find it and will never know what theyre giving their dog and what else is there.  Maybe in time those companies will grow to the point where they can advertise... then again its possible if the demand grew greatly the quality would sacrafice...
