Mindless chat Thursday

Meg, DS isn't one to entertain himself.  He is the type of kid who wants to entertain everyone.  If he has enough work, he will quietly sit & do it with no issues.  I have asked his teachers to give him extra work, but, so far, they haven't.

I did find out that the school offers testing in December to move him up a grade.  There is also a testing center here that can test him earlier.  I went ahead & scheduled him to be tested next week.  I think that, if he tests well enough to move up to seventh grade, it will be better to do it asap.

I think that I pulled a hamstring on my run this evening.  Bev & I hit one of the local hiking trails.  We were running along & I don't think that either of us were paying attention to what was going on because he bumped into me, & I went toppling over.  Luckily, I didn't have time to try to catch myself or brace myself for the fall.  DH has decided that he is going to "take care of me" so he fixed an ice pack for me, & is playing "ice pack monitor."  It's very cute that he's being so sweet.

Had you told me, a year & a half ago when I married him, that a romantic night would involve an ice pack made of frozen peas, I would have looked at you as if you were crazy.  Oh how time changes things...

This weekend, DW and I are going to visit some old friends in Buffalo. Buffalo, Texas, that is. Then, on Monday, I start my new job. And Monday is DW's birthday, as well.

Worked a stressful day today. I think I'm going to get a punching bag and put a particular persons face on it so whem he ticks me off I can "slap" him. It would probably make me feel better anyway :)

After work was search and rescue training. The park we were using for training was really pretty. Big hills and valleys, dense forest, a winding river, etc. Anyway, lily got to do a few easy exercises - finding a bone piece along our path, nose touching, then sit to indicate the find and reward. She enjoyed that a lot. She didn't understand it completely but she did figure out the nose touch, sit, reward part.

Now I'm beat. I have to leave at 6 am tomorrow to drive up to the traverse city area, visit some construction sites then drive home. Its going to be a LONG day.

Can you give him extra work yourself? Math problems, or a writing assignment? (Maybe turn the little guy into a future novelist! Wink) I know it can be tough to find things that are level-appropriate... If finances allow, what about an after-school "extra school" type thing? Where I grew up, Kumon classes (http://www.kumon.com/) were very popular among my Asian classmates, whose parents were very academically-focused. Maybe if he took an extra class, they would give him extra homework, that he could do during his regular classes? Or, failing that, what about learning a foreign language? Something like Rosetta Stone, and then he could have extra worksheets and practice papers to work on?

I hope things work out and he stops being under-challenged. I feel for the kid... so often classrooms are so focused on bringing up the under-achievers that they don't have any time/resources left to pay attention to the high-achievers.
