Pirate got attacked by a pit bull :(

Megan, all the best to you guys! Thank goodness it wasn;t worse than it was. Imagine - jumping out the window to get at another dog. That is soooo scary! You were very brave. (((HUGS))))

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh gosh thats terrible!  I'm so sorry this happend to you and Pirate.

You know people drive by Gibby and I when we are walking all the time with a dog in their car barking crazily at us thru an open all the way window....and I always think "how do they know their dog isn't going to jump out and go after us!" Now I know they CAN and WILL jump out. But what kind of idiot sits in his car and watches???????

I"m sorry for you and pirate....and I'm sorry for the PB that did it...he is a victim of his owner as well as you guys.

Heal up quickly Pirate....and strength to both of you!

    • Gold Top Dog

I will keep you and pirate in my prayers. This is one of my biggest fears when walking Damien. I hope the owners get what they deserve!!!

    Thanks, everybody!

Pirate has never been allowed to 'meet and greet' on a leash, anyway - terriers don't do well with that kind of interaction, LOL! He has a few select friends he is allowed to interact with on leash, and that's all. He seems OK for now. When we got to the vets, the receptionist's dog, Lola, (a CUTE tiny wee Boston with one eye) was there and he was happy to see her, since they've been buds for awhile. He was happy to see Tiki too.

His boo-boos are NASTY - they've been draining a lot thru the day so Daddy wrapped him up with some roller gauze :) Our holistic vet is the same at Callie's, and Dr. D sent home some salve with Callie while she was there with Kee tonight so Aunt Callie and Uncle David popped over for a visit. My hand/wrist/forearm are starting to get sore, I think I've overused them today...and the tetanus shot didn't help either! The most painful part was picking up my antibiotics, $50, OUCH!

Dear Megan, You ROCK!!!! I am so glad that this is being taken care of. Kick his butt!!!!

I hope that you and Pi are both feeling better, quicklyBig Smile Give him some extra snacks, from us.

    • Gold Top Dog

Man.......this whole situation just sucks!   For Pirate, you.........and yes, the pit (who isn't being cared for well).

I was bit 3 times last week by a cat.......I feel for everyone's pain and hope all improves quickly.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Sorry I'm so late...

Talus sends hugs and kisses to his bud Pirate and hopes all the booboos heal soon...
Glad Tiki and Megan are okay too...

I know your probably pissed at the dog (and owner) for what happend, i sure was at the the dog that attacked Bailey,  but i really hope the dog isnt destroyed. IMO, that dog doesnt deserve to die just because her owner is an idiot.

It's midnight and David and I just got home but I'm gonna address this one.  When Meg says Pi's wounds are "nasty" she means it.  Those aren't just a couple of puncture wounds.  The wound on the top of his neck and under his neck are DEEP -- That wasn't just one tooth hole -- the wound on top is close to as big around as a tennis ball flattened a bit and the one underneath was corresponding.  The flesh in both places has been seriously savaged and badly torn.  Neither David nor I can figure out HOW Meg was strong enough to kick HARD enough to dislodge a dog with a locked on grip like that.  She'd savaged his neck just getting her teeth in him -- that wasn't just an "I don't like you, you're in my space" -- that was intent to kill NO DOUBT.  Pirate's not that tiny -- had he been smaller she would have broken his neck simply with that kind of grip.

Is the owner at fault?  No doubt about it.  The dog was IN A CAR for crying out loud.  Unleashed, not under control but the dog lept out of a car to GET to Pirate.  Where on the planet is this dog going to be 'safe' enough to keep?

It's the same old story -- the human is wrong (and in this particular case it sounds like this dog has ALREADY been re-homed, so who knows on an un vax'd, unlicensed, unspayed dog (in a city where all 3 are illegal) what kind of bite record this dog already has.  No one knows, nor will ever know.

The other thing that speaks volumes to me is that this owner was so convinced the dog was uncontrollable he never got out of the car **himself** for fear of being bitten.  Has this dog turned on him before?  This, more than any other thing (aside from Pi's wounds) tells me this dog is beyond dangerous.

The reality is that Meg's likely going to have to fight just to make sure this dog doesn't go back to THIS idiot owner.  Who could easily re-claim this dog if he decides to pay the fines.  (My fear is that he'll just skip town in light of Meg's medical bills as well as Pirate's)

Pirate (and his Mom) are major troopers -- if I had wounds on MY neck like that tonight I'd be moaning and groaning and majorly incapacitated.  Pirate was glad to see us, and sniffing for Kee Shu and came back up to me again to say "buh bye".  I think he'll be fine (one of the reasons we TOOK Kee was to give Pi another chance to sociallize with a very calm dog and get him back into "buddy" mode).

I'm late seeing this, but sending an armload of healing and calming vibes --- for little Pirate and for you.  I hope Tiki wasn't too upset from witnessing the whole thing.  How you kept your wits about you during and after all that is beyond me.  Thank God you were able to get the other dog to release Pirate without either of you getting even more seriously hurt.

I was going to ask if you had any idea why the guy didn't get out of the car, and what Callie said was exactly what I was wondering, too.  I also agree with Lorib's comment that the guy probably doesn't have any assets to get via a lawsuit.  He sounds like a real gem.  But hopefully, you can get some reimbursement for medical/vet bills.

I hope Pirate heals up quickly and isn't in too much pain.  I had puncture wounds once when my mother's cat (who was slightly feral) came out of nowhere and sank his teeth in my leg. It looked like a snake bite, and even though it didn't ooze or get infected, the whole area was painful to the touch for several days.  Pirate will just have to get lots of extra treats and hugs!!

    • Gold Top Dog

OMG!  You have GOT to be kidding me.  He was afraid of his own dog so he let it keep going at you guys?  They should take the dog just on THAT alone!

I can only imagine how sore poor Pirate must be.  And, how shook up you must be, Meg.  I've had a few run in's with dogs and I'm always shaking after.

Hope you are both getting some rest now and feel better in the morning.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh, no!  Man, so sorry this happened and both of you are hurt.  Thank doG you were able to get the dog off when you did.  Poor Pirate and you.... hope you begin to heal quickly!

Thanks, Callie, for explaining better than I could have. I completely understand where you are coming from, Spazzy - without seeing the damage and the attack first hand it's hard to judge, that's the problem with the internet...this dog had every intention of killing my dog, no doubt. IMO this dog is not safe in the general public. It would take an incredibly responsible person to contain her, safely, and this owner obviously isn't one. He had a dog like this in a SCHOOL ZONE - with at least 10-15 elementary age kids walking around. What would have happened if one of them had been caught up in this mess, even on accident?

'Cause you don't mess with Mama Bear! And I am one MEAN momma bear!!

I appreciate everyone's good wishes more than they know - especially nice to see Talus! I wish some of the big doggies from iDog were around so Pirate could have a chance to meet some good, gentle big guys.

And P.S. Jennie - I had to bust out the bacon bits this morning...he was still hungry but I couldn't resist spoiling him LOL

Well it was a large, strong dog going after a much smaller dog so no doubt the injuries are going to be bad. I know a Greyhound who pushed past someone coming through a door to run across the road and attack the neighbor's small dog - did more damage than this but luckily the dog survived. The dog isn't viscous but was is prey driven and was not being managed properly (owners underestimated just how prey driven the dog could be). The owner of the dog willingly paid the other dog's vet bills, learned to be more careful and worked with dog.

Very sad when having an intact dog makes someone a criminal. Is Pirate fully vaccinated every year?

Obviously the owner was in the wrong here - his dog was confined but managed to get loose and attack another dog on public property, biting a person in the process. But like others, I do feel bad for the dog who will likely be killed due to the owner's mistake.

Smyrna has a spay/neuter ordinance for casually owned dogs --

Rabies is mandatory in Florida.  My county is a 3-yr county and I'm not sure about Megan's county.  THAT was the "unvax'd" part -- and this dog (to their admitted knowledge) had NEVER been vaccinated.  The illegal part is not having rabies (in a state where 86% of the raccoons are KNOWN rabies carriers).

Neither Pi nor Billy are, nor ever can be, "fully vaccinated" (and I didn't say that) -- Billy has to get a waiver annually because he can't GET vaccinated again **ever**.  But we titer him every year and my vet then writes a letter to the state that the titer is sufficient and the shot requirement should be waived.  Pi is also the survivor of an auto-immune disease.  But I'm not sure Megan has had to deal with the rabies thing yet.

There's nothing in the world wrong with requiring a dog to have a rabies shot -- within a certain frame of time (and hopefully the Rabies Challenge Study will give a better definition of how often the shot needs to be done).

Honestly?  I may feel "bad" that this dog has literally been ruined by the selfishness of humans.  However - given the savageness of this attack, and the fact that there WERE children around and they could easily have become involved (trying to help Megan when no one else was -- it was a kid who stopped Tiki's runaway stroller!!) I'm not going to place a dog's life above a human's.

Like is rarely 'fair' -- ever.
