Do you think Monks of NewSkete is a good book for training puppies?

Our GR is 10 weeks old and I am trying to be an informed owner- I watch CM byt just gotthe Monks of New Skete puppy book from the library. My biggestconcern is biting. Believe it ornot, we had a GR from a breeder that we surrendered back be breeder because he was very aggressive and bit. She came to see him at obedience and said she recalled him being aggressive asa puppy. With this new dog, I am SOOooooo paranoid not to have it happen again. He is totally mellow- a completely different temperment. What training program does everyone like?

Not a Monks nor CM fan here - if I'm recommending puppy books, my favorites are:

Before and After you Get Your Puppy by Dunbar
The Power of Positive Dog Training by Miller (not specifically puppies, but an awesome book overall)

And though it's not a book, the Ultimate Puppy Kit by Premier is an abosolute must have. It's as close to required reading for the puppy class I teach as it can get.

I'm not generally a fan of some of their methods, but I love "The Art of Raising a Puppy" and recomend it all the time.

    New Skete - Nah.

CM - Love him, but a puppy doesn't need CM methods. He is mostly for troubled dogs. Dogs who haven't been trained. However, to prevent the need:

My advice - How to Raise a Puppy You can Live With - Clarice Rutherford and David H. Neil

Be consistent, make sure your dog gets exercise, discipline and affection (in that order)

If you do all that, you'll have an excellent dog!

Yes it's a good book. They have been raising and training well adjusted happy dogs for many many years now. I have both of their books in my library.

As a new dog owner who just read several books and has begun attending various classes, I would say that finding yourself a good trainer or club and attending puppy manners and then various levels of obedience classes is far more valuable than books.  Books are great, but IMO they work better as supplements when you can get hands-on experience in a controlled environment under the guidance of a good trainer or behaviorist.

I also agree with this very good advice.

Lots of good books out there to read in addition to attending class. Check out several from the library and enjoy them. I really like the Dunbar book and I also think The Culture Clash provides a great deal of valuable insight. Particularly the chapter about the Gorns.
