I honestly have no idea what Cherokee is. A couple guesses, but who knows. Strangest guess I've ever heard was border collie/boxer. I don't see either of those breeds, and somehow I'm doubting you'd get a solid black dog out of a border collie and a boxer. [8|]

People guess pit bull a lot, and I might agree if she'd come from an urban area, but she didn't, she came from farmland North Carolina. I personally think my Kelpie suspicions are more likely than pit because of where she came from.

I have had many people ask "What kind of dog is that an ewok?"

One guy actually said they have a face only a mother could love.[:@]

Axl- (American/English bulldog cross) gets called a purebred English bulldog alot, which I can understand since he does look more english-bulldoggy. He also gets OEB, which I can also understand. The ones that bother me though- he's been called a Pit Bull (what the heck??) a Mastiff, a Bullmastiff, a Great Dane (??) and a Boxer.

Pepito- (Chihuahua)He gets Min Pin, "Miniature doberman," and once someone asked if he was a Pekingnese. (Again, what the heck.) Alot of people are VERY insistant that he is a Min Pin. He IS big for a chihuahua- but I have met both of his parents and they are, in fact, chihuahuas.

Culley- (APBT) Most people recognize him as a pit...but for some reason SEVERAL people have asked if he was a beagle mix. He is about the size of some of the larger beagles I've seen...but the similarities end there.

Ogre (Akita)- Ogre gets the worst of it, definitely. People very, very rarely recognize him as an Akita, if they know what an akita is at all. (They usually don't.) Many people INSIST that he is a Husky or a Malamute. If I argue, I am wrong. [8|] The best one happened a few weeks ago- someone asked me what he was, I said "Akita," and they immediately respond with "Oh yeah!! I've heard of those- you know they're starting to use them to herd sheep nowadays??"  That one got me- I'm pretty sure the only herding of sheep most Akitas would do would be to herd them directly into their mouths for eating.

Butter- (Pit/Hound, we think) With Butter we're just guessing, and most of the guesses people give aren't too far off. We get Blackmouth Cur alot, which is actually possible. The only one that I don't agree with that we get alot is Great Dane- but he is really long legged and has a deep chest and I can see why people would think it.

Chief- (Great Pyr) - He's still a puppy, but alot of people think he's either a malamute or a "white golden retriever."[&:]

I always laugh when I get told my beautiful, correct sized Golden cannot be purebred because she is "too small" (she is at the top of the height standard for a female).

lol, this woman trying to sell me Nutra-something at pet smart the other day, (doggy spoilage day, new "no-slip" collar, toy, and deshedding brush thingy mabob), told me he looked to be a pit-bull/wolf/something mix...

    Riiiiiiiiiiight.

I couldn't help laughing.  I am the QUEEN of not being able to even begin to guess at a breed, but even *I* would never be THAT off.

    lol

    Look at my pit/wolf mix!!!

I was just driving home from PetSmart (I got Misha a Greenie, his favorite, because he got neutered today) and remembered perhaps the most bizarre for me to date. Two women came up to Misha and I and asked if he had any Cajun in him. [And I thought, he's not from the Bayou if that's what you mean.] I told them I didn't think, and listed his breeds. When I got to Aussie they said "Yes. Cajun." and went off talking about how I had no clue about dog breeds or something...

    BTW talenak- cute pit/wolf mix ... [8|]

(Who am I kidding, all these dogs are cute! Even if no one else knows what they are.)

The wierdest thing any body has asked me is Lex was a " Razorback". A women said she just rescued two of them and he looked just like them. I was assuming she meant Ridgeback as in rhodesian but come on, he is no where near anythning resembling that.
    I get schnauzer/lab everyday.
Btw - he is Airedale/pittie cross, I always get a "ooohhhhh" face when I say that, then they ask "whats an Airedale?"[&:]

The rott/shep mix once got called a burmese mountain dog by a handling judge.  My akc registered akita gets mistaken for all sorts of things.  Noone has gotten her breed right yet.  At best they guess some northern breed and at worst someone called her a lab mix.  When I say she's registered akita there's always this moment of shock.

My Aussie gets Shelti and Border Collie. I've never actually heard anyone disagree with me, they usually just ask is that a Border Collie or a Shelti and I tell them no, she's an Australian Shepherd. Rio luckily has only gotten German Shepherd, he's a Shepherd mix, I'm thinking Anatolian/German because of his size. He looks mostly like a German Shepherd so you'd have to pretty stupid to not guess Shepherd.

My mom's Pyr get's Newfi and St. Bernard all the time. Yeah, a white Newfi with a few tan spots. I don't think so.

I've heard of the Dogo before.[:D

There was a lady in Rio's last obedience class that said she had a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, I don't remember which. She said she got it from a shelter. Anybody who knows the 3 breeds could clearly see it was not. It was in fact a terrier cross. It had the wiry terrier hair and was smaller than a lab, golden and poodle.

Beau's apparently a pekignese.  Most often I get chihuahua and Miniature Lassie.

    Um... okay...?

With my tri color sheltie I get border collie. With my blue merle I get aussie mix alot. I don't mind except when ;people don't believe me after I tell them they are shelties. Since I got Penny, several people have asked me what she is, and they seem disapointed when I say I have no idea. It's like they think I should be able to name at least one breed in her, but I can't.

My dogs usually don't get too confused.  Or, people don't get too confused about them.  Rose has been called a schnauzer and I get asked is she is a schnauzer mix once in a while.  Colton got called a JR mix.  Thats about it though.  I can understand the schnauzer mix because I left Rose a longer beard and eyebrows last time I groomed her.  And JR mix, well people are used to seeing shorties all the time and they aren't used to the original type that is square.  When they as that, I say, "no, he's purebred and has his championship in conformaiton."  I don't usually get into the Parson/Jack discussion unless they ask.  And then, I usually say Parsons are the original English type.

Molly is mistaken for a Shih Tzu all the time.

Someone at the dog park once insisted that Max is a purebred Southern Blackmouth Cur.  That one I can understand because he does look a little like a blackmouth cur.  But one elderly lady at an outdoor cafe once asked "Is  that one of them mean pit bulls that's gonna rip my face off if I walk by him?"  Um. No. But he might try to lick you face off if you get it too close to him.
