    Mutt/Mix owners [Rare breeds too]

What is the most interesting thing your dog has been accused of being?

I have had way too many people tell me that Misha is obviously a Golden Retriever or Retriever mix. I happen to know both of my dog's parents, and no that for at least two generations there is no Retriever in him. I almost got into an arguement (I decided not to say anything) when one German dog and horse trainer told me he had some Golden Retriever because of his tail. [Shepherd's crook comes from the Great Pyr.]

Conrad's been accused of being an Anatolian shepherd, which I thought was very odd. We get German shepherd all the time but that's much much more understandable and I usually don't even correct people when they say that (I'm just guessing too anyway, we didn't know Conrad's parents). But Anatolian? He's like 1/3 of the size of your average Anatolian and the coloring is all off! He's also been fingered as a black mouth cur, which I can see in his face a little bit, but again the coloring's all wrong.

Marlowe, though purebred, has been misidentified as all sorts of things, the most popular being a puppy doberman.

Yup, it's frustrating when people try to tell me my rare breed dogs are actually this or that, or make some other ignorant comment about sighthounds... !! But they usually mean well.

Believe it or not people say Kuruk looks like a wolf....crazy people[8D]

I think the best one I heard when I was walking my greys was a lady across the street telling her little girl "Oh, look at the Great Danes!"

My beardie, of course, was constantly called an old english sheepdog - with great authority, too.

I get asked if my Whippets (40 pound Greyhounds) are Great Danes all the time. DAILY... a lot of Whippet people get that, we discuss it a lot on the Whippet board.

I also get asked why my five pound overweight Whippet with no visable rib at all is so 'skinny' and other ignorant remarks.

my bird dog/ herding dog/ who knows what mix, was once declared a Rottweiler  "because of the tail" by a pet store clerk. And he couldn't be convinced otherwise so we just left.

Lucy gets greyhound *all* the time. Even from the vet! She's way too small and has a hound face & ears, so I have no idea where that comes from other than they must think greyhounds are gray. But then, she's not even gray, she's blue merle.

My (can't tell she isn't purebred) JRT is often mis-id'd. The JRT (or PRT) standard is very wide, but a pet quality dog she is. She doesn't quite fit in it. She's not exactly square, her chest is too wide, and her gate is off. Her coat is too soft, and I keep it shaved.

I've gotten Beagle, Pit Bull, ACD (a lot, strangely enough, she has heavy ticking), Brittany Spaniel, Rat Terrier, and Pointer. She weighs 18 pounds. I find this utterly amusing.

My Dachshund is always correctly identified, but often by people who cannot say "Dachshund".

Bou got "Bull Terrier x Australian Shepherd?" one time- he was a split-faced blue merle Cardi.

A truly disgusting number of people thought Wings was a SHELTIE. (Yeah, a 50 pound sheltie...)

Mal, most people assume is a shaved-down collie, but I also get some weird guesses- I've had someone guess borzoi before (the hell?) and doberman x border collie once *snicker*

some people have called Kaydee a boxer and pit bull mix [8|]

Belle is so "weird" looking that most people can tell one of her (maybe) two breeds but can't tell the other.

When we take walks in public I often hear people saying to another person with them, "I wonder what kind of dog that is...I see scottie (or corgi)...maybe lab?"  When I told my mother about the "whispers" she didn't believe me UNTIL she took charge of Belle when I went into a book store in Burlington, Vermont.  In the 15 minutes I was in the store she had 4 people ask her what kind of dog Belle was and one even took Belle's photo (which I don't mind at all).  When we walked down the street mom heard the whispering. [;)]  I said, "I told you so!"

    Anyway...Belle is Scottie/Corgi. :D

poor kaiser. People proudly proclaim that they can identify his "mix" all the time. "he's a german shepherd and lab mix!" Sometimes when i tell people he's a purebred, they look at me as if they don't believe me. One guy also asked me if he was a belgian. I guess that the common person doesn't know that GSDs can be black!

Wyatt is often a bullmastiff pup, boxer, or pitbull. People often think his ridge had been shaved that way or it's a scar...lol

Some people, especially kids, think Charlie is pure husky. xD

When people ask his breed I sometimes mess with them and say he is a "Golden Collie" Yes its a vey rare breed developed to herd uh...sheep in uh...Antartica! lol

Hektor is ALWAYS mistaken for a PitBull. I cannot count the times that people have asked me where did you get the white pit bull. To date noone has known his breed and noone has heard of his breed once I tell them what he is.I guess not many people have heard of the Dogo and to my knowlege there is only one other in our state.
