Little dog/Big dog people

    I don't get it.

But don't tell my little guys they can't go anywhere and that they have to be carried- they wouldn't like that. ;)

    [blockquote]
that's not what i meant. I was just referring to my friends that own small dogs and that they don't want to take their dogs hiking, or to the lake or camping. and usually when my friends take their dogs places, they carry them. I'm jealous that tons of people get to take their dogs to the mall, etc with them. They actually get to go more places. I guess what i really meant is my friends with big dogs are more outdoorsy.

also: personally i get kind of offended when people snatch up their dogs when mine are near. Mine are on a leash and to me, it seems that the other person thinks i can't hold on to my dogs if they wanted to get loose. I guess i should think of it from the little dog owner's point of view...[/blockquote]

I think what Lori means is that a lot of people let little dog's bad behavior slide. Take my neighbor for example...she has a min pin that is very aggressive and he lunges and barks at the end of his leash. Everyone thinks it's just sooo cute. But, when Kaiser reacted to that dog in the same way, he was a vicious, bloodthirsty killer.

I like all dogs, Love the big breeds and also admire the terriers.

Not everyone does hold onto the big dogs. Little dogs are seen as prey by some prey driven dogs.

    yeah, i've seen people that can't control a 20lb beagle [&:]
I've been rude about it before...at petsmart i looked at this woman and said, "If i can control a 1200 lb horse...i think i can control a 90 lb dog."

I totally agree. To me a dog is a dog no matter what size the dog is and they all need to learn.

i've NEVER picked up CoCo around any big dogs, but I will yell out ahead of time when the dog is with their owners, "is your dog friendly?"  and if the owner says yes, we let our dogs sniff each other for a bit, before we continue to go on our walks.... that being said.... CoCo gets picked on by a lot of puppies, or dogs her age...ie. she's had a lab x her age who humped/harrassed her to no end....

but I think big dogs are nicer towards her than the smaller dogs.... [:D] She's had a pit bull crawl on his belly to be on her level to try and play with her.... her first friend was an english bull dog who recently had puppies was ULTRA careful around CoCo, making sure where each of her paws went as to not step on her...whereas in obedience class... a 9lb yorkie bit her RIGHT in the face with no warning.  Good thing CoCo had a ton of hair then.... lol

Other than that... I would LOVE to get a big dog...but usually big dog requires more strenuous excercise, and I really cant physically give him that... where as CoCo excercising her can be easily done indoors in terms of a few games of fetch a day.

Max qualifies as "big" at 60 lbs. but he's a total couch potato and happy to be one. [:)] He enjoys the occasional trip to the dog park and his walks, but if for some reason we don't get a chance to do that he's more than content to just sprawl somewhere and snooze. He doesn't require strenuous exercise at all.

I think there probably are more people who look the other way when their small dog misbehaves because it's easier to get away with. I think these people are totally irresponsible, though. I mean, if it were a big dog they owned, they'd probably put it to sleep or leave it in the backyard, but since the dog is little, they tolerate it.

Alot of people I know who only like small dogs are that way because they don't want to or can't train a dog.  With a small dog they can hold them easily even when they throw a huge fit and threaten to bite everyone.  They also don't bite as hard.  Not to say they can't do damage but if my akita bit seriously she'd do alot more damage than my friend's toy fox terrier.  So they can ignore some nips and bad behavior because it doesn't become as dangerous.  None of those people would ever be found on this forum or probably any other dog forum because they don't care to put in the time or effort to learn or attempt to train.

I mostly just like larger dogs because small dogs would get trampled by livestock and wouldn't be able to go on hikes with me.  But it's also partially the fact I've never seen a well trained small dog.  They are always noisy little monsters that bark, nip, and run away constantly while the owners keep up this constant monologue of either yelling without backing it up or baby talk despite bad behavior.

When ever I'm on a walk with Blue if I see someone with a small dog ahead of us they pick up their dog or hurry as quickly as they can to get off the street we are on. It can be annoying at times, but I'm kind of glad they left I don't have to worry about them freaking if their dog gets too close to mind.

Alot of people don't seem to train their little dogs they just let them do what ever they like because they are soo cute or soo small.  I have had to deal with more small dogs being out of control then the big dogs trying to bite, jump on people, and aggression.  If the dog gets out of conrtol they will just pick the thing up. My boss's daughter has a friend who has a shih tzu mix that bites it's owner if it wants anything from her or just does it when ever it likes they call it spoiled.

Excuse me.  I will take you up on a test between your large dog and my small shelties any day of the week.

It always ends this way with questions about big and small dogs. I wonder why it does that. I think there must be a large difference in the people of large and small dogs on the whole. Seems like it is that way.

Even if a small dog knows to stay out of the way the horses don't notice them as well and don't respect them as much.  They avoid my akita and rott mix and will actually make sure to pick their feet up to step over them even if the akita puppy stands underneath them.  They try to kill small dogs and cats.  Two Step has succeeded in the past in killing a small cattle dog mix.  I would suggest not letting small dogs in my pasture unless they are highly trained for livestock use and those dogs would be the huge exception to the rule around here.  Most people don't train their small dogs.  Like I said you also wouldn't find any of those owners on this forum.
