    Tootsie was attacked!!

I am shaking writing this. Took Toots out on leash to potty and an F******* pibull came out of nowhere, pinned her down and attacked. The owner or whoever was right behind the dog and yelled at the dog, while I'm screaming and it took off. She had a little blood, her hairy butt saved her,but she is fine. I called the police, filed a report, but am pi****. I know pitties are sweet with the right owner, but will never look at them the same. EVER!! I couldn't even protect my dog, all I did was scream and cuss. I'm so upset!

Oh my!! i'm glad to hear tootsie is okay, it is understandable you are shaking!

Did the dog's owner say anythign to you?  Good for you for phoning police! I hope you guys are okay

How terrifying. I would have panicked too. Did the owner apologize?

Are you going to take her to the vet to check her over? Just to make sure there aren't any injuries hidden in her fur? Poor Tootsie.

Aw!  Poor Tootsie!  That really sucks.  How is she doing?

    • Gold Top Dog

That poor sweetie. Give her extra hugs from me.

I'm so sorry to hear this....and as a dog lover...I'm sorry that it was a pitty.  It is just so hard defending the sweetness of a pitty when you keep hearing of things like this.  Yes.....it is the responsibility of the owner to not let this happen...but dogs will be dogs and any dog can ( and does ) attack any dog.  My friend Donna lives in a nice residential neighborhood...has a rescued dog that she absolutely loves....sweet as can be and thinks she is part pitbull........   her and her husband walk the dog every morning before he goes to work and then at night when he comes home.....but she said she can't walk Freeway lately because of all the dogs loose in their yards and several have ran out after Freeway. Freeway was attacked by two dogs ( a doby and another dog she didn't know what it was ) from the same house last year....now they are weary to walk them.     Here is a case of a pitty getting attacked.......and yet..... I have a feeling there is not too much sympathy for them.

The owner said nothing! Vet on Monday, shes due for an exam anyway. The apts. just sent out a letter listing all banned breeds. The manager will be in tommorow and will be getting an earful and then a vet bill!

I worked so hard to socialize and this happens! If shes sketchy now, I don't blame her.

Poor Tootsie!  I'm so relieved to hear that she's pretty much ok, give her some extra scritches from me please.  I'm so sorry you both had to go through that.

Way before I joined the forum, after owning Apollo for only *maybe* 2 months he was attacked by (of all dogs) a male Golden Retriever- purebred. The dog was off leash, Apollo was on leash (the area was leash mandatory). The dog ran up to us, wagging tail but hackles us, started sniffing Apollo's face. I didn't think too much of it, I saw the owner about 50 yards away running to us w/ a leash. Then- BAM!!!!- the Golden grabbed Apollo's face and shook him HARD. The was a lot if growling and yipping- it was loud. He had 6-10 punctures all over his face, many on his muzzle. The owner grabbed his dog and said he was very dog aggressive (obviously) and kept apologizing. I could tell he felt bad and didn't mean for this to happen, the dog's leash broke. He did pay for the vet bill, thankfully. Apollo didn't even try to fight back or defend himself. He was around 85lbs-ish then and was shaken like a ragdoll. It was very scarey.

But....you wanna know who Apollo's BFF today is??? A purebred, male, GOLDEN! LOL! About another month later I became a dog walker and my first client was a Golden named Merlin. Apollo and Merlin get along GREAT w/out any issues ever. It's been that way from the begining. They just like to pal around, chase a ball together, swim. Good buddies.

I think he's like that because I didn't make a big deal out of dogs- especially Golden's.

Hopefully Tootsie will be OK with dogs still.

Shes very wary of other dogs, in the first place. She doesn't like anyone in her face, including humans. If shes interested, she'll initiate, otherwise leave her be. Shes not mean or growly at all. People get offended and kids don't get it. If a dog runs from you or their dog, whats not to get?

    • Gold Top Dog

If you can expose her to some known dog friendly dogs, and try to not let your anxiety transfer, hopefully she'll not have too many long lasting effects.  It is unfortunate when people allow their dogs to run off leash.

It does sadden me, as someone who rents with a breed on many no no lists, to hear of yet another apartment complex banning breeds as a whole, rather than requiring responsible ownership.

     Poor Tootsie!

If it makes you feel any better, Penny had this happen to her repeatedly when she was about 4-5. It did make her quite wary about other dogs for a while, especially big ones. She got over it eventually on her own, but never quite got comfortable with strange dogs although she was an absolute pro at handling them without getting herself into trouble.

If she could recover from repeated incidents like that, then I'm sure Tootsie can. It all turned around for Penny when she met a sweet young Samoyed. She liked his fur and soon decided that if he was all right then maybe other big dogs were all right, and she very quickly got most of her confidence back.

Sounds like the property needs a leash law, not a breed ban.  My dogs have been charged attacked by a mini-wiener dog, a pair of Shih Tzus, and two Beagles (separate instances).

I hope Tootsie checks out all clear and isn't permanently traumatized!

The cops just came, took a report and gave me some anti-septic to clean it. I understand about the breed restrictions because its a huge insurance liability. All dogs are required to be on-leash at all times. I go out of my way to obey the rules, its because of idiots that there is breed restrictions. I'm so peeved, I have no sympathy for irresponsible owners. I could say a lot more, but I won't. It could have been any breed that did this, its unfortunate it was a pitbull. If my precious, unassuming, friendly dog is hurt or traumatized from this, watch out!!
