    My Heart Is Breaking UPDATE

Last week while taking my kids to the kiddie pool in town, a young, maybe 6-7mo old black lab/pit mix wandered into the pool, very hot, and gorged on water. He was very friendly and of course was surrounded by children in a matter of seconds, all petting and pulling tails and whatnot. So I happend to have a leash in the car, delegated a guy to call animal control and waited with this sweet ,sweeet sweet boy.  The lady with animal control here is also very sweet herself. Our facility has 5 runs total, it's a very small shelter.

Well  drove by yesterday and this sweet boy is still there. I am at my limit, dh says we can't have any more animals until he's out of the navy in 6-7 years. I've asked around with family and friends and nobody wants him.  I Hate the pet overpopulation problem.  I talked with this little guy and he was just wagging and wagging and formed his little lips into an O shape and woo woo woo at me.  I can't stand it.  I can't let myself go down there anymore.

I asked the ACO about fostering but she says they do not allow it.  :(  Anybody in south dakota want a sweet boy?

    :(

This makes me think though, in the future to adopt rather than buy.  Stop thinking about a certain 'breed' close eyes to color, hair and sex and go with the best temperament I can find (happy, wigglly, bouncy, good with kids, loves people).  I do not regret meeting this guy, because I have learned a valuable lesson here....

    Just venting, thanks for listening!

    UPDATE!

I stopped by yesterday and found out this guy was adopted by a family with young kids! Yahoo!  What a relief,  hope he has many happy years with his new people.

I find that is the hardest part about volunteering at the shelter - knowing they all won't make it out alive and mostly because people are so careless.  And that I can't help them all.

(((Hugs))) for comfort and thanks for caring about him.

Yes! I will never get why some folks will go for the one that has the right "look" even when that dog displays a uneven temperament.Especially if there are kids in the home.

Really the reason I was thinking 'poodle' or 'pwd' etc was because I am a groomer by trade and I LOVE to scissor. But in reality, suppose after both my little ones get in school and I have time to volunteer for a shelter, sooner or later a poodle or some other loveable hairy pooch comes in and I'd be able to 1. save a live and 2. Scissor to my heart's content! Right? This has been good, even if I can't stop thinking about this one particular pup, he has taught me a very, very important lesson here.

How long has he got?  Makes you feel helpless doesn't it - surely SOMEONE here, or someone they know, wants this sweet dog?!

They keep the dogs until the runs are full and then someone has to go. :(  It sucks.   I'm still asking around and trying to spread the word that he's a really great puppy.

Maybe you could right up a little ad like the one that was posted here a little while ago, Young Single Male seeks companion type thing, and post it on Craigslist with the number for the shelter he's at?  Someone has to be more creative than me around here, maybe we could colaborate on an ad to get this little guy adopted?

Chuffy, the update is in the bottom part of Shamrock's first post.  I had to look twice, too.

YEs, this really is such good news, he has a wonderful temperament for kids so they should have a great time together. :)

The shelter I'm at has at least 1/2 a dozen hairy poodley things right now. It is the largest in the county, though.

If you could find a bigger shelter, they might want a volunteer to do haircuts and baths before the dogs go home. Our staff does the best we can, but we're short on time, and skill, LOL. Anything at all matted just gets shaved down. We'd love a volunteer groomer to help us out!

This is my plan. When I have some free time I'd like to volunteer at least for the grooming part for a shelter and then (like the last poodle boy I had, bless his heart) adopt when the right one comes in.

I'm so glad the pup found a wonderful new home!  I don't know if I'd be tough enough to work in a shelter, though I know they need the volunteer help.  I'd want to take home every dog that was scheduled to be put down.  I guess I need to run my own no-kill shelter, eh?  Yeah, as soon as I win the lottery.
