    Sago Palms and dogs......

I was just reading an article in our local paper about a woman's dog who ingested a sago palm this past Spring and almost died. The dog is still not completely recovered. :(  I had never heard that these are dangerous to dogs and thought others might like to know.

It pays to do your homework before you add plants to the landscape.  I have a dog who likes to "sample" the greenery in the yard and I'm sure others do too.

Yikes! Thanks for the heads-up. We used to have one of these when we lived in CA, but fortunately Rascal never munched on it.

For the uninformed, this is what they look like:

HUGELY lethal to dogs -- in fact, it's gone from being one of Florida's state trees to almost non-existent down here.  I *think* if recollection serves, it's theobromide again (which is what is in chocolate) and it's a very similiar, even more lethal reaction.  Dogs are EXTREMELY drawn to sago palm and it's incredibly deadly.

Good to know. Another reason I love the PNW.

Yes, it IS deadly....one of my sister's dogs ate some and died.  She and her husband did not know it was a killer.  It is SO popular here that I shudder.

It's very deadly, & it kills very quickly.  One of our neighbors lost her Newf after it ate the seed pod of a sago palm.  She was outside when he ate it, & called the vet, & took him in immediately.  He was on IV fluids for 2 days, but his liver levels continued to skyrocket, & the neurological symptoms worsened.  She eventually opted to euthanize him instead of continuing to let him suffer.

I believe that the chemical that is toxic is cycasin.

    This even made Snopes:

    and the ASPCA says:

You're right -- it IS cycasin not theobromide but it affects the liver similiarly.  VERY toxic. Literally every single part of the plant is toxic.

That's good to know! We used to have a few of those - beautiful plants! Luckily our dogs aren't plant eaters.

Wow that's scary! Surprise I had a Sago Palm for about a year and it was in a pot on our porch. Some of my plants would get nibbled on when I forgot to put them up. Luckily I was always protective of the palm because it was my favorite, but there was a time when one of my dogs chewed off a couple of leaf strands. I am extremely lucky!!

As I was reading this thread I read my own response and was like " I don't remember this". No wonder, it was 3 years old. Stick out tongue

LOL, at least the message can stand repeating!

I didn't notice the date either, but I agree with Marty.  It never hurts to be reminded of toxic landscaping.

     Definitely  a good reminder.

It's really too bad.  They're gorgeous little trees and probably pretty drought tolerant. Unlike some palms, I think these stay fairly short and compact.
