How does your dog tell you?

How does your dog tell you?

that he needs to go out?  Another thread got me thinking about this, so thought I'd ask.

Kota will sniff around a door.  Any door that is closest to where you are.  He will sniff, look at you, wag his tail, then sniff again.

Shadow will sit by any door. She will just sit there, staring at you until you  notice her.

Pepper will come get you.  She gets all excited, runs to the door, runs to you, runs to the door.

Tasha....hmmm... I'm not sure that she knows how to tell me actually..... well that will cause a problem some day.

Of course now we have a dog door so most of the time they can let themselves out.  :D

Kaiser trots laps around the couch and in the kitchen until I get so sick of hearing/watching him that I finally get up and put him outside.

Luke doesn't ask unless it's a complete and total emergency -- and even then, his form of "asking" is to go lay next to the door and look at me with pleading eyes.  If that goes unnoticed, he may come and shove his nose under my arm to get my attention, but I usually notice the sound of him thudding against the door/floor first.

Jamison scratches the front door which is weird because we only let him out of the back door.

Apollo is like Luke in that he won't "tell" me unless it's an emergency. But, when he does "tell" me he will sit by the door, if nobody comes then he'll whine/cry/howl.

Blaze won't tell me.  Co-Co will sit in the doorway from the living room and kitchen and whine.  Then she'll move a little closer and whine some more.  Then she'll throw in a few barks.  After that she'll come as close to me as she can and bark.

When Trudy wants to, generally, go out, she looks at me with a smiley face and says "Huff, huff!" If I don't respond right away, she looks at me and tilts her head as if to say "Gee - what don't you understand about "huff huff"?"  If she has to poop, she stand in front of me and moans.

Grace aroos, does a tap dance and tries to lead me to the door.

Caleb does a variation of what Kaiser does.  First,  he just lays in the kitchen by the doorway leading into the diningroom.  If he honestly has to go out, he walks up to one of us, then turns around and goes back to the kitchen doorway.  The more "urgent" it is, the more often he makes his circuit.  If he has to go out really bad, he'll poke you with his nose, then head to the kitchen.

Cleo is the only one reliably house trained. She comes and stares at me...then walks towards the door. Usually she does this not so much when she needs to pee/poop but when she wants a drink since her bowls out there. But she's does both when she is out. She has the bladder of a camel and no doubt could and has held it ALL DAY.

Rascal does not "tell" me at all. I am thinking about bell-training him, though.

Thor will sit close to me or DH and sigh... then a bigger sigh looking at you with a sad stare like "I'm sorry to interrupt you but..."

When he wants to drink he would sigh laying down or will go to his plate and make noise with his muzzle.

Coke sits right in front of me (or on me) and wiggles or paws at me.  Nikon runs to the door, whines, runs back to me whines, runs to the door...

Kenya has never indicated, just goes out when she has the chance.

If they are downstairs, they'll stand by the patio door. If they are in my room, they will stand at the door and quite possibly scratch at it. However, I always go by this method. I will ask them "Do you gotta take a $%^&?(expletive for poop)" and if they do, they'll get up and run to the door. If they don't, they ignore me. People find it rather hilarious that my dogs know what $%^& means.  Stick out tongue

Well it depends on which human is available, ha!

The boys can go out any door of 3 but usually will let the person closest to a door know :)

Hot is very very verbal.... Woof, woof woof... stand still to verify that you are paying attention, woof,woof,woof..... if I'm in the kitchen he will go paw the door if his "Woof's" are not acknowledged then two steps back to the kitchen and woof louder!   Of course then we do the question game,   "Need to go potty Hot?"  woof, woof, woof, ...wags tail...knocks everything off with in tail range and woof some more.

If Hubby is home, he is usually in the living room with tv or bedroom with computer.   He tells me Hot will come into the room and start the asking....woof, woof, woof.... if he hubby doesnt immediately ask,  "Do you wanna go outside?" then a series of woofs and moans followed by the huge paw on his lap once he get up from the chair Hot escorts him to the front door and hits it with his paw.

Funny thing about Hot is he is very predictable with his routine.... he wants out to potty immediately after he has eaten.  He can sleep in the airconditioning all day without going out (cause it's too hot for Hot!) but he wants out first thing in the morning and right after he eats.

Rocky is only verbal when there is something outside that he needs to check out....then he whines, runs to me runs back to the door whines some more then back to me then back to the door until I pay attention.  He will sit in front of our side door (the one we use the most) forever just watching.  If he needs out, during the day he will go jump on Hubby's lap, jump down and go to the door.  When I am home, especially in the warmer months I am usually outside and he is right there with me.  Now if Hubby is in the kitchen, cooking no dogs want out cause they know something will soon hit the floor or special human treats are sure to come.

Forgot to mention: both can let themselves back in the door but I havent been able to teach them how to shut the door behind them

Bugsy just goes and stands by the door - usually this means he just wants to go out to be out but will go when out there. If he REALLY needs to go and no one is there to see him standing at the door he rings a bell. If he gives the bell a good whack you had better hurry :-)

Riley "growls" at whoever makes eye contact with him until they let him out. Obviously it's not an aggressive growl, but rather a higher pitched "growling" sound...it's really strange. I'll have to take a video of it sometime. Whoever looks at him first is his designated person...he'll focus only on them until they let him out.

Cadie stands at the door and paws at it, if no one notices she'll do a few quick, breathy, high pitched barks until someone lets her out.

    I have strange dogs, lol. : P
