    Suggestions on activities...

I want to do more stuff with Alex this summer but need some advice... We are very similar yet completely different in our likes and dislikes, if that makes sense at all. Lol.

So I'm looking activites we can do. Some background would be good I guess. Lol.

Alex can't walk for long periods of time, maybe 10 minutes tops and no major hills or inclines.  He doesn't like puzzles or my type of video games. He's not interested in the sports I do with the dogs (thou he does support it. Lol) I really dislike his type of games but will watch him play.. Usually they put me to sleep thou.  I love long walks with the dogs and don't mind going alone. In general I'm very independant. Our taste in movies is VERY different (EI: I love disney movies, he loves horror movies. I do to a point.. They give me weird dreams) We don't have any board games but it is a thought..

So suggestions? Lol.. Our funds are limited. I'd like to have one day a week that is just us. But I don't know how possible that is...

OH! And no movie theaters.. He hates crowds and doesn't do plays.. *sigh* Lol

Learn an instrument? For example, there are a bunch of "learn to play guitar" type books, DVDs, and websites. Can be fun to learn together, and try duets.

Good idea but no musical talent. Lol. Hmm...

Does he likes to go out of the house?

    • Gold Top Dog

Depends. If there's a lot of people out, no. And because he can't walk far, he doesn't like to go out much either.

How about a trip to the library?  We have waaaay more than books these days! For example, we just kicke doff our summer reading program today with a big party--games, face painting, ice cream, etc. FWIW, this was for ALL  ages, not just kids! We offer great prizes as well.  We also have book clubs, movies to check out, lectures, etc.

What does he likes to do? Apart from watching movies and playing video games...

What did he liked before getting hurt? If it's ok for me to ask.

He was into wrestling. Was training actually to wrestle professionally. That's really all he was into except for working.  So now he's really into playing those Smackdown games.

He likes to play Cribbage but we need to buy some pegs for our board. Lol.

He can't focus on a book anymore. Electrocuted himself a few years ago.. Yeah I know.. Lol He's a work of art. Big Smile He used to draw as well. Was quite good at it and I'm encouraging him to get back into.

Thinking about it, I never realized how much he's lost due to some stupid accidents...

Could he listen to a book on CD?  We have lots of people who (for whatever reason) can't/don't read, but who LOVE to listen to books.  Actually, some of our biggest users are those who check out CD books exclusively.

Check out the young adult section.  Ours has wrestling magazines!

I think I remember you said you like anime or mangas... I know that there are courses to learn how to draw the characters and stuff. Maybe that would be a good idea to dedicate some time.

I'm sorry if I'm asking something I shouldn't, but does he would be willing to use a wheelchair? and be able to go out with you and the dogs for a long walk? I think to be inside of a house for long periods is not good and fresh air and a little exercise is good for everyone.

That's why he doesn't come with you to Black Diamond?

What about canoeing/boating?  Wouldn't require walking and would get you guys out doing something VERY different.  Canoeing takes teamwork and you can see some really pretty sights, renting a pontoon boat might allow you to float away an afternoon and allow him to be at the wheel instead of following your lead.

A similar idea: horseback riding depending on his abilities.  It can be very therapeutic for some people with limited mobility as well.

Oh thought of another idea: city tours by bus or trolley?  I know some towns have tours of all the haunted places; I bet he'd get a kick out of that!

He's not willing to use a wheelchair yet cuz it scares him. We both know that a wheelchair is a very good possibility in his future. Once the back yard is done, he wants to get a pool back there to use. I'm thinking of asking him to come with me to the duck pond. It's not that far and a fairly easy walk.

That's why he doesn't come with you to Black Diamond?

Cuz him and my dad DO NOT get along.. Lol.  Think Shrek 2 with the dinner section. *snicker*

Boating is a good idea!  Horseback riding wouldn't work. Jolts his hips and spine *much to my dismay cuz I really want to go horseback riding. Lol*

And there aren't any city tours here. Town's to small and it's all hiking or outdoorsy stuff.
