    Help with cats and dogs

I'm in need of help. Tonight i took my dogs to the vet to get their vaccinations and there is a 'garfield' cat on the bench. The vet said she was about to put it down....the owner just came in. He Dumped one dead cat on her desk and gave her this one to put down. She checked it over while we were there...its sterillised, and *seems* to be  very healthy. About 8 years old. Vaccinated every year just got a few fleas.

We are thinking about adopting it the vet said if she doesnt know by tommorow she will put it down. Our problem is:

    1. my dad and sister are allergic so it would have to be an outside cat... is this ok?

    2. We have 3 dogs. They are inside dogs. We have no idea if they like cats. Our rottie x has never seen one before she is 2. Our sheltie is 5 and has never seen one and our tibbie x is 2 and we think she might have been brought up with cats - how would we introduce them to each other?

Do you think this would be a good idea or not? I feel so bad for the cat. I think we were supposed to be there tonight, we are supposed to look after this little baby. Any help would be really appriciated

    Thanks guys

Could you find someone else who would take him? I wouldn't put him outside, because he may not have been an outside cat, and his fate could be worse than ebing put to sleep.

taking a cat because you feel sorry for his circumstances only to turn him outside isn't going to work.
He won't develop a bond with you and will probably take off. What's to keep him there?
A life outside to the elements, having to look inside at where he should be - does that sound fair?
And to make him inside only with dogs that are questionable isn't worth the stress in the home.
Allergies can be dealt with as it's not the cat people are allergic to it's the dander on their coats. But everyone in your home would have to be commitment to dealing with that or the cat suffers in the end. Perhaps being PTS is the only alternative meant for this cat. Worse things could happen to him as stated by the previous post. One of those is a life outside.

I have a rottweiler with a very strong prey drive. She grew up with cats and kittens and can live in perfect harmony with them IF SHE IS WATCHED EVERY SECOND. Also, the cat HAS to be bombproof. It CANNOT startle or run.She just doesn't associate that running small animal with the kitty she was curled up sleeping with minutes before.

I would never ever ever ever trust her outside with my cats. But I, when I had cats, never let them outside either. I have found cats in my backyard that she has killed. I hate it and I'll do everything possible to prevent it, but it is natural to her.

If your dogs are not used to cats, and you're not planning on giving this cat the life it deserves anyway, than maybe you should just let fate take it's course with it and not get involved.

If you want to save the cat, why don't you call a cat rescue? Maybe you could take her over to someone who can find an appropriate home for her.

Good luck! It sure sounds like a sad situation. [:(]

I agree with everyone else it's not fair for the cat to come live with your family just because you feel sorry for the guy. The cat may not be used to living outdoors and he may run off then become injuried since he really doesn't know you if you do make him live outdoors. This cat may not like dogs and this could also play a problem in your household. I think the best thing is ask any friends of yours if they want a cat and tell his story also a cat rescue. I hope he gets home soon.

ok i just called the vet and i will pick up 'motley' at about 6pm after buying her a bed etc. The two amin shelters arefull and i dont know anyone who would take on an 8yr old cat. I think possibly i gave you all the wrong idea. I have very spoiled inside dogs im not about to turf a cat outside and not bother with it. That is completly against everything i believe in.

We have a 3 car garage in which i will put a bed, litter tray, food, toys etc. I am off uni for a week and so will spend lots of time in the garage with the cat, i will take it outside on a lead every few hours so it gets fresh air. After a week if my dad and sister are not allergic the cat can come and go from the house as it pleases.

The cats i know generally prefere to be outside....the come in, nap and eat then leave. This cat (according to the vet) has probably never been shown any affection and the owner literally threw her to the vet and said 'kill it'.  She recons it wount have been let inside before.

I'm sorry but i completly disagree. A life with us and food, shelter and love is much better than being killed or living in a shelter. I feel really hurt that you guys would think i would be so cruel to a cat [:(]. I hate people who keep their dogs outside. I would never be mean to a cat. I will do everything i can to include this cat into our family.

Lots of you have dogs that get along with cats. Please give me some ideas on how to introduce the dogs and cat....i need some help. I thought i was doing a good thing saving it

You are doing a wonderful thing.

I hope you can keep him inside that your dad and your sister don't have allergies from him. I would see about putting the cat in a crate then let the dogs come up to it so that it gets use to dogs. Watch the cat see how he reacts then remove the dogs from the room and let the cat out so he can explore. I wouldn't feed all the animals at first keep the cats feeding time seperate fromt the dogs for a while.

Then again someone may have a better idea about introducing them together.

thank you for your advice. Do you think i should put rhw dogs in a crate one at a time and let the cat go up and explore them?

I'm getting excited. This si the first time i have ever owned a cat. What do cats eat.....i give my dogs a good quality kibble AM and then i homecook PM. Can i give the cat a good cat kibble am and then same as the dogs get pm?

Thank you for taking in this 8 yo cat!!!  People can be so cruel.   I think your plan will work with lots of time and patience.   What I would do is keep the cat in the garage and let the dogs get use to the smell and his sounds through the door. This could take a week or more.  Do not let the cat loose for 3 weeks (if this is possible) because he may leave and go back to his original owner.     The dogs and the cat have to get use to each other on their own time and should not be rushed.  Be sure the cat is up to date on vaccines and that he IS neutered before you bring him home.   Any questions on the health of the kitty ask your vet.  If you can afford it I would suggest a blood panel since it's a senior cat, also a feline leukemia and aids test done.

I would buy your new kitty a good brand of kibble. ;Put the kibble/water and his bed up high in case the dogs get loose in the garage.    I would skip the home cooked stuff for now, just let him get use to his new surroundings and get settled in.   Good luck and keep us posted.  I hope this helps, if you need more info feel free to PM or e-mail me.

p.s. No, you cannot get leukemia or aids from your kitty!!!

Patt_b and bluelightning thank you so much for your help. I will definatly try to keep her inside for 3 weeks and the sounds thing is a good idea.she is sterrilised and is on flea and tick and ear mite preventitive. As soon as i get some money i will check for the lukimea and aids. I really didnt expect this and i didnt budget. Its cost me $200 up to now with vaccination, bed, food, scratch pole, kitty litter etc etc

Thank you :) I will post some pics asap
