I'm wondering, too.  Do you put anything in the bag to attract the flies?

I know that several years ago, I found one of the best fly traps ever.  It was a lid with small holes that you'd screw on top of a Mason jar.  In the jar, you'd put about 1/3 water and something like bologna.  After a couple of days, the flies would flock to it, crawl in, and not be able to get out.  The downside was dumping it - even after a few days in the heat, the thing would stink from the dead flies and the rotting bologna, not to mention the maggots.  I'd practically put a hazmat suit on to empty it.  Ick!

No, you leave the bag closed and attach in front of a door or something.  My aunt used to do this at her house.  She always left her back door open and swore by this as well.  I am not sure why it works but supposedly it does.  I need to try it in my garage!

Are they just afraid of ziploc bags or water? I don't get how this could work but I'm willing to try anything.

Not really sure but here is something I found about it.  I guess it can't hurt to try it...only look a little funny!

water bags and flies - interesting!!  I'm willing to give it a try.  My sister's house has no screens at the moment, but it's too nice to close up the house.  Nice thing about WA is that it's low on bugs, but ya can't help flies...

Meanwhile, a hummingbird just visited the geraniums on the porch... nice. :)

Gracie's leg is doing much better.

We do the same thing for flies...I'm always amazed how that works so well.  Fill a ziplock baggie with water (or halfway), zip it up so you don't lose the water.  I have one just sitting on my deck table.  DH says it works because flies have many eyes and the water drives them crazy with the reflection....so they just stay away.  I know it works.  He removed the baggie one day, and sure enough....I must have had 50 flies buzzing around driving me nuts.  Put the baggie back, and Voila....no more flies (for the most part anyway).  There's still a few that are around, but truly it keeps most away.

Disclaimer....it does not work for the humongous hybrid horsefly/bee poplation that is currently terrorizing us.  Sad

Apparently it works with the water  because it gives flies the idea that they are flying into a spiders web.  I only fill the bags half way, then I staple them where I want them to hang. I put them over the door way of the barn, and at each corner of the patio.

Weird! I wish it worked for mosquitoes.

It is getting dark out! The online weather doesn't show a cloud in the sky for miles. Confused

That's just crazy! Think how much money people spend on fly repellant stuff and all they'd need is a baggie full of water. I'm really anxious to try this out. When it gets super hot here, we seem to have an abundance of the nasty pests. This forum is so educational Big Smile

I think I'll try the water bag but reading Sarah's link info, I'm not a believer yet.  The experiment for 13 weeks proved it didn't work but the experiment was done indoors so the light refraction was different.  What the heck, it's easy enough to try.

Busy, busy at work and still more to do.  These pesky customers......wait, they pay for my dog food and all the finer things in life like baggies filled with water. lol   I love customers! LOL

I'm going to try the baggie thing, too! We haven't gotten a storm door for the front door yet, but the breeze up here is quite nice if we can leave it open.

I know there's lots of threads on vacuums, but does anyone have any advice on carpet cleaners? I kind of want one, but apparently the "home" ones aren't as powerful as the rug doctor ones you can rent.... but I don't think i want to 'have' to clean everything all in a day, or two. I might want to do one room at a time or something, or stains as they come....

we haven't had real carpets in a long time, at least not any that I've cared to clean!

Jackie & Cathy, be sure to let us know if the fly bag works!  Living in town, I don't seem to have many flies.

Okay, so my witch co-worker just whined to the boss about the chair.  Said she couldn't put it out or bring it in because it smells too bad.  We keep it in our entryway that is locked when we are gone, put it out on the sidewalk when we're here.  We only have to move it about 3 feet.  She certainly didn't melt from having her hands all over it Monday.  Whatever.  Confused

I shocked and saddened by the shooting incident at the Washington D.C. Holocaust museum.  I would like to visit it someday.  I visited the one in Israel when I was over there many years ago and it was very moving.  Reports are saying the shooter was something like 80 years old (maybe more).  Hard to believe someone would still have all that hatred after 8 decades of life.  But then I guess that's what fuels holy wars and such in Israel and other mid-eastern countries even today.  Sad.

I bought one of those small spot type cleaners and it does okay but not great. I had a regular sized carpet cleaner at one time and I didn't think it did a great job either. The danger of leaving any residue behind is that it'll be even dirtier in no time. I also don't use the kind you can rent. I used to use Chem Dry and really like them but the last 2 times I've had it done, I've used Stanley Steemer and they've done a great job. I live having it done at least yearly but would prefer to have it done 2x a year.

Tina, these events have been really hard on those who are now elderly.  They stayed glued to the radio so as not to miss anything, they could only hear and not see, and that had a profound effect on them.  I will never forget 9-11, but at least had some connection through TV....and that one has had a lasting effect on our country.

My 85 yr old MIL has a lasting dislike for the Japanese and anything oriental...my 85 yr old Mother, not so much.  The Pearl Harbor  attack affected different people in different ways.

I would guess this might be a case of post traumatic syndrome gone untreated...but who knew about that back then.  This is not to excuse the man, but to try to understand why.

Today has been a day! I took a shower in cold water last night because I didn't know the hot water heater had bought it. Guess I should have showered then run the dishwaher! Hubby was already in bed so I just toughed it out.

This morning, checked the breaker box and the breaker had blown. Called the landlord and waited around till he showed up instead of running my errands. Wait some more for him to bring a new one cause he thinks it's the breaker and not the heater - ie, he never checked the water heater!

An hour later, still no hot water and the new breaker is tripped! It's 3 pm by now. Grrrr Whole day shot! So I have to track him down and then move all my nice clothes out of the closet. He opens it up and the plastic cover, the surrounding plastic, and the wires are all burnt and black! Thank God for breakers that trip! He's talking about just replacing the element, but the thermostat needs replacing too...as well as water on the floor. I'm calling hubby to get him to come home from work early to talk him into just replacing the whole thing when Mr. K finally changes his mind and tells me to have hubby bring home a new water heater. Finally!!!!!!

So now here I sit with hubby and landlord trying to get the old one out and the new one in while my bedroom looks like it exploded in there. The girls have been locked up in their crates all day and I'm having a hot flash to rival all hotflashes! That, and it's 82 degrees in here because lowering the thermostat any more and the AC never cuts off! UGH! I hate days like today!
