on Nancy Grace yesterday, there was a news story in which a woman, who couldnt find a baby sitter for her 1 and 4 year old children, decided to take them to work with her anyways.... and left 'em in the car....

once she left work, obviously, the two children were deceased.... but yet she supposedly she still was able to stop by arby's to get some food.... then when she got home...she put them both in garbage bags and stuff 'em under her kitchen sink.... [:@] talk about sick...

anyways... in nj, even if say you were running into a 7-11 or something for something quick, you cant leave your car idle; there are signs every where that says it's illegal due to air pollution.

i wouldn't leave my dog in a car without it locked and running...for their safety and the public's safety.

This is not safe for the gerneral public and it is illegal in many places for that reason.  If you must do this then get a remote start system that will shut the car off if it is put into drive.  In some places if you leave your car running and it is stolen you are responsible for any damages it may do.

I have a truck so he couldn't knock it into drive. Yeah, i guess it could be stolen but where i live there's not really a lot of crime. It was a risk i was willing to take TWICE in my life.

Here's my situation. I live in Florida. I have a Jeep Wrangler soft top with side doors with the plastic zipper windows (not full doors). I do NOT have AC.

I realize when I take Patton in the car the windows must be unzipped and I generally roll up the back window. This gives him a nice breeze as we are driving and Jeep Wranglers generally do not get as hot as regular cars because Jeeps do not have slanted windows so there is less sun getting in which keeps it about 40-50% cooler than regular cars. However, I am fully aware that if left alone in the car with the windows unzipped, Patton will surely jump right out and frankly I don't think that "cracking a window" is enough. Cracking a window does not truly circulate air or keep a temp down, esp if it is very hot out. ;Patton is smaller so even when he sits up straight his nose wouldn't  reach the top of the window so it would have to be rolled at least halfway or more down for him to stick his nose into fresh air. So I don't ever leave him in the car. If I had air conditioning maybe I would but only for a minute or two (going to pick up a pizza I ordered, go to the ATM, etc.) but around here I just think it's too sketchy to leave a car running.

Any vet will tell you that "cracking" a window is pretty much worthless in protecting your pet on  a hot day. They see the results of that all the time.....

You may want to check your local bylaws. We have a 3 minute idle bylaw in our city but it does not apply when temps are over a certain level in the summer or below a certain temp in the winter.

Some people just shouldn't own dogs/animals period. I just hope for the sake of your pets that, on that occasion where you "had to leave the dog in the car for a second with the engine running," the engine doesn't cut out, because the odds of that happening are a hel* of a lot greater than getting hit by a meteor, struck by lightning or any of the other horsesh*t examples you care to write here. I suppose that what Michael Vic did is okay too!?!?!?!? I'm done on this thread. You can't teach someone common sense.

That is a pretty broad assumption to make considering you have no idea as to the situations and circumstances behind me having my dogs in the car.  It is also very broad assumption to know the mechanical condition of my car and it's ability to idle for extended periods with the air running.

Did you know that they make alarms for cars that will page you when the temp in the car reaches a certain point.

You're right. I shouldn't own animals. My poor poor dogs are abused. I shouldn't have to defend myself anymore. i don't know how many times i said it's not like i take my dogs everywehre with me- i just said on 2 occassions they were to be left in the car. Guess you can't get that through your thick head.

and HOW DARE you imply that i think what michael vick did was okay?that is absolutely ludicrous!!!!!!!!

This is a friendly reminder to keep it civil, please. Do not harass, degrade or disrespect your fellow members.

I think that a lot of this stems from our country, and dogs not being allowed to go into places. We had this discussion before, but if you were going to run in the store for a short period,I would bet most people would take the dog with them if it was allowed..

Certain local hardware stores do allow for pets,as long as they are under control, and i make a point to shop there.
