    papillon dogs

*This  maybe a repeated post, if it is, I do apologize.*

I have a 4 month pure-bred Papillon puppy.  She's starting to fill out through her tail and she's forming the butterfy ears.  Her body has some long hair, but mainly it's  short hair.  Will her hair eventually grow out?  She's feeding on Science Diet.

What are your views on rawhide chews and greenies.  I'll be honest with you, I'm afraid of her choking on either one of them. What would you reccomend?  I do give her a nylobone and a lot of toys.

if anyone has any ideas, please let me know...........thanks........[:D]

I would start giving beef tendons, lamb ears, bully sticks, raw bones... natural things like that to chew on instead of rawhides and I would not give and greenies.  I have read quite a few threads here about the dangers of greenies... and even if your dog doesnt choke they can still become lodged in the intestines.

I do not allow my dogs to have either rawhide or greenies, as they can be choked on and large pieces don't digest well. I know several people who feed them all the time, but I have big biters (don't knaw, just bite off hunks). I think the nylabones and other stout chew toys (like Kongs) are good alternatives

Kelly hasn't seen this thread yet, so I'll provide the food links! [:D]

    Welcome to the boards!
Her food is really not the best. You may want to research other possible foods, it will probably make her coat more shiny and glossy! I'm not a Pappillon owner, but I feed my toy dog a raw marrow bone once a week and it keeps her teeth pearly white!

    Hello!

Since the food/treat issue has been addressed by several other posts, I can help you out with the coat.  Paps often look a bit "sparse" as babies.  Many lose their puppy coat and go through a naked phase around 6 mos.  Your baby should start to come into coat as she gets older.  My current papillon was absolutely naked until about year old.  His coat started to really come in at that point and at 3, he's quite hairy.

    Hope this helps!

Welcome to the joys of Papillons!  I can't tell you anything about puppyhood with Paps because I got mine when he was 5 y/o.
I would definately change your pup's food.  SD used to be a decent food but now I feel like they've gone down hill @ are resting on their reputation.  As far as chewie things go, I would listen to what others have said about bones.  Paps are known for having teeth problems & I think whatever you can do to help keep them healthy is a great idea.
PS: we need to see your pap. [:)]

I uploaded a picture that is simular to Laya, my Papillon.  I hope it came through sorry, if it didn't. She's mostly brown and white and a bit black on top. She's shorthaired through the middle.   I tried to download a picture of her and it says it is too big in demensions.  I noticed that my picture dementions are higher than the required 290 X 290.  How do I get it lowered in demensions?  I'm following the avatar/profile directions.  Is there a trick to this...[:)]

Thanks for all the  great information.[:D] and wonderful pictures

It looks like the picture didn't go through, so I'll try something else  !

    Hi Mike
what kind of picture program are you using? that is where you need to resize the photo then save it as say another name, or same name and small if your program  has the options for email, general or full, you can use the email or general
    • Gold Top Dog
When you have the picture up in your picture program its usually an option under Edit... it may say something like Resize or Image Size... you can go there and type in the dimensions that you need it to be like 290X290 like that.  Then save it and come here and click upload picture and then check the box that says imbed picture in post and it should show up.

I finally got the picture resized.  Thank you for your help.   She's really a tiny little think, but she has a heafty yelp.  Sometimes it scares me out of my seat.. ha ha.

Awwwwwwwww, Michael, she's stunning!  Can I recommend a book that you might enjoy?  "Memoirs of a Papillon".  It's a hoot & you'll laugh all the way through it.

For me I  would never give my dog a raw hide that was not compressed!! The tied one are very bad!!! In my view they choke on them!! I had  a  puppy once that choked on them.  And might had died if I was not around....   But for me the Greenies they seem  to injoy them.  And never had any probs with them..
