    remember being at my Grandma's (Dad's Mom)  they had a garage apt behind the house.  I dont know why we were there or how old I was but I remember my Mom teaching me to play Jacks.

    I haven't thought about playing jacks for years and years!  LOL  Oh man, did we ever play a lot of jacks when I was a kid and knew all the cool moves.   I wonder if you can buy them anymore?  Probably on ebay.... "goes off to check ebay"

    If you find any, let us know where you found them.  I remember discovering as a kid that the best ball for playing jacks is a golf ball.  They really have a great bounce.

    I don't remember doing any home work. Ever.

    and that's about all I *DO* remember.  It's either feast or famine -- I either have good memories OR bad from any given year.  I remember 4th grade particularly because the teacher was just pure 100% mean.  She decided to arrange the room by how "intelligent" we were (loosely based on grades but she truly was mean about it).  That put another guy and I in the back corner (where I could neither see nor hear) and it put my friend Richard all the way up front ("because he's the SLOWEST";) -- Rich was LD way way before it was diagnosed (this was like 1964) and his family were as poor as they came and Richard was lucky if he had a shirt that buttoned and NO help to get dressed if he found something TO wear.  I remember this woman ridiculing him because his shirt had holes and only a couple of buttons (and buttoned wrong).  I remember well, going up to her and POINTING my finger at her and saying "Mrs. ____ -- RICHARD is my friend and he **CAN'T** help that he's slow and his mom doesn't do his shirts well.  If' you'd let me sit up front like I wanted to I'd help him and YOU wouldn't have to bother!!" (I'm pretty sure I ended that with my fists on my hips)

    Needless to say I won no prizes for personality with THAT teacher, but she did lay off Richard.  But I remember my 2d grade teacher went to great lengths to help me get a cheap vase and a couple of plastic tulips so I could give my Mom something for her birthday that DAD didn't have to go buy and that was a "surprise".  I think I clapped erasers for a month to pay her back for it *grin* -- NICE lady.  I think my Mom still has that green vase

    But oh Man, Jewilleeeee -- where were YOU when I had all those hours of homeowrk.  I'da shared -- PROMISE!!!!

    You and me both, Callie!  I went to a Catholic school and not only did we have homework every night, we had twice as much on weekends because we had two extra days to do it. doG forbid we should be able to enjoy Easter or Christmas vacation without a major assignment .... we even had reading lists for the summer and there was usually a huge report due on the first day of school about "what we did over the summer." Sad

    Yeah, I found some on ebay, they are cheap, just a few bucks.  I remember using a golf ball too but it only worked on some surfaces.  Remember cupping one hand and then sweeping the jacks inside that cupped hand?  I wish I could remember the names of the moves.  Around the world was one, I think.  I do believe I will order me some jacks.  Why not? :)  I remember another one where you held one hand like a fence and put the jacks over that hand.  What was that called?  I bet the names will come to me once I have my jacks. Big Smile

    Was this one Sheep jump the fence?   LOL!  I guess I am going to have to call Mom!

    I need to get some Jacks too, I think it would be nice if someday my Granddaughters could say  "I remember when Granny taught me to play jacks"  Big Smile

    Please, call your Mom and ask her if she remembers the names.   Pigs in the pen, that sounds right but not sure about Sheep over the fence.   Now, I must remember to order my jacks.  lol   I'll let you know when I get them.  You definitely need to get some too and teach your granddaughters!  Practice first, so you look like a "jack rock star".  LOL  I think I'll email one of my cousins, we all played together and one of them might remember some of the names.

    Ok finally got a chance to catch up with Mom, we had a laugh about the scarey stairs.  She told me she had responded to my request by email.  I am afraid we are not a lot of help....lol here is what she had to say;

    My dear daughter if you expect a 72 year old memory to be better than a 52 ?? year old memory then I must be a better mother than I thought.  I'm not sure of the names but I think the one you remember is the one when you put your left hand in a cupped position on floor or table and scoop one at a time into that hand and the one she is talking about is when you hold the left hand up and pick up a jack and drop it into that hand.  I will try to rack this weary brain to think of more before my great granddaughters are grown.
    Love you

    We will put our combined memory together and see if we can think of more Stick out tongue

     I have a CLEAR memory from when I was two. It was a traumatic day so that may be why. Our dog was hit by a car and killed. I remember what I was wearing, what my brother was wearing, the dog getting out, my dad going after him. I even remember seeing the cars slow.

    Yippee!!  Thanks!  My sis remembered the one called "cherries in a basket", that's the one your Mom was describing.  LOL at her remark about her memory!  I still haven't ordered mine, I keep forgetting till I look at this thread and then promptly move on to something else.  Talk about memory issues.  LOL  I'm going to ask my coworker to order me some, he's always on ebay.

    My first memory as a child, when I was about 3, I lost my oldest Sister, she was just l7.  I recall, her casket in the l/r and my Mom holding me up to tell her goodbye and I patted her face.  Don't know why but it is just as plain as if it was yesterday.  I am 77 years old.

    How sad, that must have been so hard on your family to lose her at such a young age.
