Mindless Chatter Weekend.

So, I'm now officially insane.  I brought home a baby duckling today.  She's got a neurological problem of some sort, or maybe some damage to a wing or foot, She probably won't ever be able to be an all outside duck, but she could be outside in warm weather when she's older, and I can always get her her own little wading pool.  I have no idea what I'm going to do with a duck.....I'm just nuts, that's all there is to it.

Hahaha I wouldn't call that insane Glenda, baby ducks are so cute you would have been insane NOT to bring it home! FH had a pet duck as a kid, it followed him everywhere and cuddled like you wouldn't believe. It got left outside one night by mistake and a fox got it though. You will have to post some pictures of your new addition!

We took the dogs out for a walk today to a marsh, we had never been there. It sure was pretty! There were all these boardwalks stretched across a very large pond, most were half sunk at this time of year, but we will go back in the summer I'm sure and play around. Timmy went swimming as usual, that darn dog loves water. Its kind of funny, swimming looks quite hard for him. He is a very dense dog. The dogs were acting like maniacs though - they were pulling everywhere and not listening very well to us, I have no idea what was going on with them!

wow it is so gorgeous out - still!

Our dog walk was today and it was so incredibly wonderful - early guess was over 2000 walkers and 1000+ dogs.  Just wonderful and there were some Earth Day things going on too and all of downtown Raleigh was just a way cool place to be Big Smile  Posted some pics in the photos section - well actually I posted a link

Only complaint is my asthma is bothering me badly again - Ithought we got past the worst of it but no such luck!

As for early rising - I was out of bed by 6:15 - I can never sleep much past 6:30 so no biggie

If Corky survives her babyhood, I'll be sure to post pictures.  I will say this...she is VERY loud.  Chatters almost nonstop!  Now, she's just a baby and she's supposed to be under a heat lamp until she gets her feathers.....guess what she has now is just fuzz.....so, is it OK for her to swim in her water bowl?  Silly little thing just goes nuts splashing around in that water dish.  It's a tiny little thing, but then again, she's pretty tiny too.

I can just see me trying to find a house with 6 german shepherds, 3 cats and a DUCK!  LOL!  Will certainly be an interesting trip, where ever we go, whenever it happens!

So....who knows anything about ducks??  I was told that they drink 3 times as much water as chicks, which tells me absolutely nothing, and to use chicken starter feed for her.  I had her in a box in DS's bedroom, but he had a fit about her a) being in HIS room and b) me bringing her home in the first place.....I believe his exact words were that I'm f'ing insane!  So now she's on the kitchen counter in a very small cat crate with the heat lamp clamped on to the cupboard door.  Will have to find a place to put her tonight where she is critter safe......but, the cat scent certainly doesn't seem to bother her.  Oh, and she's yellow now, but her head is a bit darker.  Seems like the ducklings I see out for a stroll with their mommas are all the same color as the momma.  Do domestic ducks have different colors?  And just how long does it take for them to get actual feathers??  The heat lamp is going to make US rather warm in the short term....

Glenda, if I were to bring a duck home, my dogs would thank me for the snack & I'd never see the duck again!

Karen, I was in Raleigh for a few days earlier this week.  It looks like a nice city.

My 5K was interesting.  The trail where we were running was covered in 2-3 inches of water, & it was pouring rain.  Strangely, running in torrential rain & mud/water was almost relaxing.  My feet are covered in blisters, & my shorts even rubbed blisters on the tops of my thighs.  Even with the blisters that was probably the most relaxed that I've been in the past few months.

Yes it's ok for her to swim in a water bowl. I had mallards once and that's what they swam in till we got the little pond put in for them. I kept mine in a wire hamster cage at first when they were tiny. I had 2 of them. I dont know about water consumption well because I kept a bowl of water in there with them that they swam in and drank from. I fed mine chicken starter feed because I had 6 baby chicks at the time also.

She will probably be white when she's grown. All the yellow ducklings I have seen are white when grown. It should be a couple weeks her feathers start coming in.

She's such a tiny little ball of fluff, but sure knows her own mind!  I switched her food and water bowls.  The one I was using for her food is a bit taller and deeper, but that eliminates her ability to climb in and sit in the water for now.

When DH doesn't think I'm watching, he's over there peeking in and talking to her.  They are bonding!  LOL!

I was wondering whereabouts in NC you were - I know you weren't here under the best circumstances but if you come back give me a call!

I once did a triathlon in a Nor'Easter on Long Island in fact the swim was in the Long Island Sound - certainly a memorable experience Indifferent

I forgot to mention Glenda. At night or when your not watching her I would take the water out. She could accidently drown. Yes I know she's a duck but one of my friend's aunt had a duckling drown in the water bowl while she was out mowing the lawn.

Its safe to say I cleared out the ole lungs today! Mountain biking is such a work out but it felt great. I did fall once. In the mud. Go me. Now I think I've earned a soak in my hot tub. Tomorrow I probably won't be able to walk

Thanks for all the info, and for the water bowl tip.

Im so sad. Joker has grown up. He lifted his leg for the first time ever to pee. And he did it 2 times. I was hoping he would pee like a girl forever. I even kept him away from Fynn when he had to potty. Maybe I should c/t for peeing like a girl? Lol.

Aesop refuses to leg lift. Grimm, on the other hand, started lifting his leg about a week after I brought him home...at about 12 weeksIndifferent

if she's very loud, she's probably unhappy. she's either too hot, too cold, hungry, or thirsty. when she's happy she will just make little peeping noises. make sure she's not panting and her wings aren't sticking out - that will mean she's too hot.

ducks don't like heat that much - they aren't like baby chicks.

Corky survived the night.  Everytime I woke up and thought I should check on her, I heard her chirping away, so she's also very considerate, saving me from getting out of bed.  She seems to be walking better this morning.  Not so circularly.  And she seems much more alert than she was even last night.  She's funny because when we go over to check on her, she starts talking to us

The dogs are interested in the sounds coming from the little crate, but they haven't even bothered to really sniff at it, so I'm tickled that they aren't bothering her.  I keep calling her a HER but of course, have no clue what gender she is.  Someone posted a  bird cage on Freecycle this morning, so shall see if I can get that for a temporary home for her.  With all these dogs, yep, she's gotta be safely enclosed and it would be really handy to have something extra so that when I clean up her enclosure, I have a safe place to put her while I work.  She is a messy little thing.  We're calling her Corky because she reminded me of a corkscrew the way she was going in circles, AND, it's not gender specific.  This morning her movements are much more purposeful.

Today is my day for spending with my Mom.  I think we're cleaning closets today.  Joy.  But, I can do it more quickly and easily than she can and it's overcast and looking like rain so not a pretty day for a drive anyway.  I will NOT tell Mom or my sister that I brought home a slightly damaged duckling!  They both think I'm nuts without adding fuel to the fire!  Of course, eventually, I'll tell them....but when she's bigger, stronger and I have a home and a place for her other than on the kitchen counter!!

On that note, "the guy" was meeting with one of his investors yesterday, and this is the man who is going to be providing much of the money for the actual operation.  And since he's a big deal in real estate, maybe even a house for us to live in without having to search for one.  I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear back.......

We might break the record high of 89 degrees today. I think yesterday we got to 84 and it was beautiful.

I woke up with horrible cramps. I'd decided to manipulate things with my pills so I wouldn't have to deal with this when I go to Florida next weekend. I think my body is unhappy with me messing with the natural course of things :(

I really would enjoy hiking today but I think I'll be nice and help DH finish up his term projects for 2 classes. I figure it's the least I can do since he's going to have to take me to the airport next Sunday to catch a 6 AM flight.
