    Know it alls

Everyone has a pet story. It's one of those topics that almost every has something to add to it.  For some reason, everyone who has ever owned a dog thinks that they should tell you what to do with your pet, often times complete strangers.

For example, Joey and I were in a parade on the 4th of July.  It was hot out.  I kept Joey well hydrated and even poured water over his head several times.  This one lady watching the parade said.  "Honey, your dog is panting, that means he's hot.  You need to give him water."  I didn't respond to her.  I just gave him water seconds earlier.  Now, I look young. I'm 25 and I look and have been mistaken for 16, even 13, so I'm sure she thought I was some dumb, ignorant, neglectant, child.  But it really irratated me.

Then theres those people who know that your knowledgable about pets, but still think they know more, just because they've owned a dog or their monkey's uncle has owned a dog. Every job I have had since I was 17 has been dog related.  Currently I am a sales rep for a pet product distributor.  I sell every category of pet related items.  Before that I worked at a Pet Supplies Plus for 4 years.  Before that I was in high school and was working as a dog grooming assistant.  If there were a game show on dog food, I would undoubted win.  But a friend of my husband, after telling him what I do for a living commented on how Pedigree is the best dog out there.  I don't want to get into an argument about good dog food, but we all know there are better foods out there.  I commented nicely on how Pedigree is really one of the lower quality foods.  He started talking about his friend that breeds pita and how his dogs are huge on it...   May I add that he was standing in my home office surrounded by my books on dog food and samples of the several food my company carries.  But...because he has a friend that breeds "huge" pit bulls that feeds Pedigree, he obviously knows more about dog food than I do.  I let it go...but why, seriously?...

Feel free to share you stories.

i had people do the same about a dog being thursty when i gave him water minitues ago. a dog pants to keep cool not because its dieing of thurst. Also I was walking up the street one evening and I seen this groomer and I liked one of her dogs so I went up and asked about her rhodesian ridgeback and she seen that my dogs hair was a little roughed up from the water and said you know you need to brush your dogs hair 2 times a day and I said yeah I do. She then started talking about how long haired german shepherds have an outer and inner coat; I then said 1 of the reasons that " long haired" german shepherds are considered a fault is because they dont have an inner coat and it makes less weather resitant and what not, she then got a bad additude and said well if you believe that they dont have an inner coat then believe it because thats bull crap I said well thats what many sites about long hairs say and even in the akc book, she thought she new everything about every breed because she was a groomer and it made me think how did she ever get any business if she told people about there dogs.

This is sort of related, but my older cousin just got married and she comes from a family of dog lovers, which is really cool.  On the reception tables, they had pictures of random dogs and on the back, the cards said that instead of wedding party favors, they were making a donation to the Humane Society.  Also really cool.  We got to talking about it at our table while she came to visit and she was talking about how they love to support the Humane Society b/c it's a no-kill shelter and yadda yadda (nevermind the fact that they like to breed their labs together for fun)...I just smiled and explained that I volunteer there walking and training dogs, but I didn't have the heart to tell her that we are not by any means a no-kill shelter!

Why would she think it was a no-kill shelter does it have a sign or did she assume that? Why would breeding your labs together be a fun?

There is this one woman who I cannot stand when I hear her talk about dogs. She insists that "all Spitzes are traitors" and that her dog pees in certain places to "get back" at her. I tried giving her some suggestions about obedience training and teaching him to go potty in one spot, but she dismissed them with this condescending smile and changed the topic. (This is the same individual who called my dog ugly.)

Another woman I know is not so bad, but she did tell me that Science Diet was the best food because homecooked gives dogs kidney and liver damage. She also told me that beginners should train their dogs using choke chains. She says she feels sorry for her dogs because the chokers hurt them (Are they even supposed to hurt when used properly?), but that's the way things are "supposed" to be.

Oh, and numerous people who insist that my dog is part purebred purely because of her coat. They never want to believe that she was a Heinz 57 who was rescued off the street.

I don't know.  We are not a no-kill shelter.  It's the FIRST thing they tell prospective volunteers.  If anyone has a problem with euthanasia, they can simply leave right away without getting upset.  Their website advertises low-cost euthanasia.  I'm not sure where she got it from.

And I don't know why their dog had babies.  One cousin had a female, other cousin (her sister) had a male.....I don't see them much, but all the sudden, there were 3 more labs than before and another cousin had one!

from what i have heard... no kill shelters just send the unadoptable dogs to kill shelters when they need room... sort of like.. musical chairs, the rotate them around to different places until... oops! no more room!
i dont know anything about long haired shepherds... i've seen them, they're kinda cute... but i would have to see one and touch its coat myself to see if there is no undercoat. but living in florida.... a long haired dog would be misserable, undercoat or not. in this are a people with fluffy dogs either keep them shaved or keep them inside.

the water incident in the OP would have irked me too....
when i was at a dog show with my cousin and her ambull puppy (6 months old at the time, recently acquired from college kids, no leash training, he pulled like a freight train so we had a halty with us and a collar) this one lady standing in line with us started up with all kinds of crap remarks.... and it started as soon as she found out his breed. some young lady came up and asked if he was an amstaff.... no Ambull all the way, just a puppy, she smiled, petted him, was very polite and a lover of both breeds. she went on her way... but that was when the other woman started up.... she first said "You know i've always said buckle collars are for lost hound dogs... i said.. yeah you're right.. "So why is he wearing one?"  .. um... incase he gets lost? no i didnt say that. i was too dumbfounded at the moment. but my cousin mentioned the halty because he pulls, and the collar is just there for backup (the halty only helped a little) then this woman rolls her eyes and says "Yeah right. give me a choke collar and five minutes with him and he wont pull anymore" .... [:-] and before either of us could reply she said "And this is an AKC Sanctioned event. he isnt even supposed to be here because he ISNT an AKC breed" .. i almost said that was a good thing... instead i said .. well... the people at the gate asked us if we were showing or spectators.. then told us where to park. "Yeah will a REAL AKC event wouldnt have allowed him.." just then someone's dog broke free and ran through the crowd... my cousin caught him which broke up the conversation with introduction of greatful dog owners....
ok.. at THIS AKC event... they had Big Dog Rescue with all their MUTTS. they had Gadsden County Rescue with all of THEIR mutts... they had the vendors with their personal companions, mixed breeds, designer dogs, etc....

later on that day we over heard this lady complaining that the judge was blind, she should have won the ribbon.... ooooooh i so wanted to ask if she was competing in Best Bitch.... her tone was all kinds of rude and "i'm better than you"
maybe our dog wasnt supposed to be there but i could have thought up twenty different nice ways to tell someone that.
honestly i took pride in telling people who asked his breed that he is what English Bulldogs USED to look like.. before AKC.. you'd be surprised at how many people dont know that.

I'm sure the people with pitties in their lives get this worse than I do, but one of our dogs is a Chow mix. I am frequently told that they are all vicious and unpredictible and that she will turn on us. One of these people is DH's brother who thinks he knows all about dogs. The last time he had a dog was 20 years ago and it ran away.

It has been seven and a half years and we are still waiting. Perhaps he should have packed a sack lunch. Or.....maybe tonight is the night she will savage us all in our sleep.

Ohh don't get me started on this subject. Because I am young, people alwasy assume I do not know how to raise or take care of a dog.

Whenever me and Raja are at the dog park, or anywhere actually, say the Petstore and I bring Raji in, someone has to comment on how...."There are dog training classes you can take yout dog to" or "She isn't a hound/Great Dane she is a purebred Labrador"

Or some other senseless comment, making me look dumb.

We have had more then one person say.....(while Raja is doing her playful bark at the dog park to get aother dog to play with her.)

"You know you should take her to training, they can help with annoying barking"   or   "She seems a little too hyper you should put her outside more."[:@]

Gee...really.... she needs training..thanks for pointing that out too me....she's already been, and passed, and is enrolled in another one this fall.
And as far as I knew dogs barking for less then a minute at dog park was okay.

And yes genuis idea..Raji is hyper at Petsmart..that must mean I should toss her outside and she can try jumping the fence, eating the fence, destroying the yard...and that will for sure tire her out.

Oh and about the dog food, I used to try to nicely inform people....reletives or close freinds that there were better foods out there then Dog Chow.

I have tried countless times to inform my boyfreind and his weathy parents that there are better foods then Beneful, and I get the same answer every time.

"The vet recommends it, and its packed with meat and veggies, and the dogs just love it, I can tell they are so healthy."

[sm=banghead002.gif]  you can't argue too much with that. Then when I suggested something like Canidae and told then it was about $30 for a 40 pound bag..she said....."Why would I waste money on that, when I can buy the best food out there for $25."

    I've given up.

my inlaws found out (accidentally... i wasnt supposed to tell but didnt know it) that their oldest grand daughter got a pit bull puppy from her boyfriend.... oh we debated that for almost two hours!! they had only owned one dog and it wasnt a pit bull, but it was a terror dog... it almost killed one pit bull, it ran a kid's pet rabbit to death, would claw through plate glass to attack people walking down the street. it would drag people around while on walks.. nearly killed two dobermans at the same time...
my FIL had only met junk yard pits.... and his view on pits is the same view he has on snakes... the only good one is a dead one..
my MIL automatically takes his side on it. even though he wasnt debating she WAS. defending his opinion with her... ignorance.
finally i told her that if its true that all pit bulls are bad... that if their parents were fought that the pup will fight.... that ALSO means that certain ethnic groups will always be thugs, thieves, rapists, criminals with no intention of doing anything nice for anyone.
Oh boy did she back peddle!!
of course seven months later we got our American Bulldog... the first meeting didnt go so well because.. Kaydee is a protection dog.... she doesnt like men very much anyway, and especially doesnt like FEARFUL men. when my FIL met her for the first time he was shaking in his shoes.. so Kaydee woofed and growled at him, then eyeballed him for the rest of the visit.... because he was so nervous. which some how proved his point that pit bulls are killers..... no not just pit bulls... ALL bulldogs.
he loves to tell me the latest dog mauling headlines... which sparks another debate....
it was funny the day we told him about Kaydee finding the six foot rattle snake outside the shed and telling the whole world about the dangerous creature out to kill us all. if we hadnt had our killer bulldog that snake would have either eaten my mom's baby chickens or bitten my husband while he was in his shed.... which was right where he was headed when Kaydee found Mister Snake.

Lol, what difference would it make if it was "part" purebred?  Wouldn't it still be a mixed breed?  People always seem so disappointed when they ask what kind of dog mine is, and I reply "mutt."  That's what she is, and I love her.  Maybe I should think of a fancy-sounding name for her, so they can answer "oh, I've heard of those!"  Lol.

I hate people saying I should feed my dog more.  She eats a LOT.  One lady even tried to feed her.  She asked if she eats...which of course she does..and then totally ignored that...saying the dog was "fasting" because she hated her food.

ETA: She's a fine weight.  The vet told me that's what she should be.

she isnt a mutt. she is an Austrian Otter Hound. i have heard of those. rare outside their own country though... hard to come by too.... also illegal to export. [;)]
i love doing that to people lol

Yay Kaydee! In my book she earned her keep for life. When it comes to things like that my dogs are rather oblivious. They tend to reserve their defense energy for garbage trucks. I will never accidently be run over by a garbage truck!

Exactly! And good idea on the name thing. [:D]

In my country, mutts are the "lowest" on the totem pole. People here love anything imported (especially from the US), so a lot of them adore purebred and don't think much of mutts. They also ;prefer crossbreeds, even if only one of the parents is purebred -- though, in reality, anything not purebred is a mixed breed.
