Dog Fights on TV?

    Dog Fights on TV?

I know this is a topic we're all very passionate about and frankly, it ticks me off that my local news channel is showing actual dog fights when reporting stories about them.  Reading through the Vick update post, I noticed someone (Sandra?) who felt like the public should see this stuff to make them face the horrors but I feel the opposite.  Seeing it isn't going to make it go away.
Post the pros and cons of 'publicizing' such graphic footage because I guess I'm completely missing the benefits.

It's true that seeing it won't make it go away, but it's possible that seeing it will get more people involved in fighting it.  I think most people have never been in contact with it and have no idea how really ugly it is. It's sort of an "out of sight, out of mind" thing for them.

I have mixed feelings about this - the people that will be interested in doing something to end dog fighting are probably already animal lovers anyway.  It's incredible to me that some people can watch something like that dispassionately, but then why are dog fights so popular?  Not to mention how much the visual of a dog fight can freak out a young child.  I say no to the dog fighting in detail on TV, though I absolutely support reporting it.  I also think the media should make the penalties for participating in dog fighting very very clear.

What people really need to do is turn off the TV whenever the NFL, (who has taken an "Who cares, time for practice" attitude about the whole Vick affair) has a game on TV.  Is anyone willing to do that?  Is Vick a role model you want your children to look to?

They have an article on CNN tonight that says that 30% of the dogs going into shelters today are Pit Bulls.  They attribute much of this to people buying dogs for fighting, and then deciding they can't handle the dog.

After listening to a talk show host talking about Vick a few months back when this all came about,,, I have to think that showing a little of this might not be a bad idea.   The host said he was totally SHOCKED at what he saw and was horrified at it.  Maybe in this case it was a good thing to show it. And if that is true,,maybe more people should see the horrors of it, to make them realize how ugle the whole practice is!
    That said.....I'm not watching it!

i could understand them showing footage of the police breaking up a dog fighting competition or hauling a suspected dog fighter to jail, but showing images of actual dog fights is just sensationalism. it definitely seems put in there to shock and hopefully gain viewers.

i think the news should report about people being arrested for dog fighting crimes, and should try to make people realize that it is barbaric and wrong. i think they could do those things without showing images of dogs fighting.

i've got mixed feelings... on one hand it shows the fight which can be aluring to sickos... on the other hand it raises awareness...
but then again if they wanted to get peoples hackles up they would have shown the aftermath of the fight, not the fight itself. for me its more shocking and heart breaking and anger inducing to see a dead dog torn to pieces, or tied up with a soup can taped over his muzzle and left for dead.
if they want to get folks involved then they would look up some of the videos on youtube.. especially the Brian Adams song from Spirit.

for the most part i didnt like that news report. and you beat me to posting this. i didnt like that they were blabbing the profit factor of dog fighting.... how is that different from BYB for profit? its telling the public "This is how much money they make and its a lot and thats WRONG isnt it?!" but old Joe Bob who just got fired might disagree.... a man has to survive after all..

a man has to survive after all..

surviving off of dog fighting (an actual crime) profits and surviving off of breeding (not a crime) is totally different.

do i think BYBing is right? nope. but it isnt a crime.

I see no need for it. People are desensitized to murder as well...should we start showing crime scene footage too? what about autopsies....or wait they already do that...cept those shows are "fake". How much of a positive impact has THAT had on peoples ability to look at dead folks and not say much?

It's a bad idea....I agree with Bradley show us more on how LAME and weak the laws are, more on people actually getting caught, more on the downside and consequences of it.

well i agree, but to a lot of people a dog is just a dumb animal. who cares how it earns you money. i dont agree with either, but think about it this way instead....
Pit Bulls are popular.... they sell VERY well. people also use them for fighting and will pay a lot of money for a good dog. there are certain blood lines that are very popular. advertise those bloodlines and you have early retirement before long. you dont have to actually fight the dog... he just has to have a fighting heritage. just like most shepherds dont herd sheep, but their parents did....  a lot of people buy a dog based on the blood line.
supply and demand... and then add popular blood line... maybe it wont get you a new hot rod, but its a nice little under the table income....

I watched CNN last night (usually do) the Nancey Grace hour.....she spent a long time on the issue and kept showing the fighting of 2 sets of dogs along with other things about Michael Vick.    She was horrified in her story and made that clear...and if anyone was watching that had no idea...they would sure have had an opinion after watching. I personally kept closing my eyes..and couldn't watch the actual fighting to be honest...but there was no blood or fight until death scenes and nothing that would totally gross people out unless your like me where just the actually fighting grosses me out and make me sick.
I honestly think that it would have done good the way the whole show was portrayed,, although her attitude about the shock and horribleness of the whole thing helped all by itself.

(emphasis added by me) But it should be.

I cant abide sensationalism in the news.  Give me the facts. No more and no less!
Edit to add:  I do think that we become desnsitized to the horrors perpetuated by criminals because of the way the news and the tabloids kind of glamourise the crimes in a sickening way.

The bottom line is that many people will do nothing about a problem until they actually see what it involves.  You can talk about overcrowded  animal shelters endlessly, but when you see picture of animals actually being killed in the shelters, it takes on a whole new meaning for people.

Michael Vick is a low life piece of  *content removed* I swear I was watching Nancy Grace lastnight and they showed the pitbulls fighting  and all I could feel is rage come over me..... and they also used Golden Retrievers as fighting bate and they were all dead. They rubbed cocaine on the dogs gums and also gave them gun powder to ingest so there stomachs would be upset so they would fight harder and meaner.... https://community.hsus.org/campaign/US_2007_dogfighting_nfl2/eswbu6rldtxewk;Please everyone sign this petition and pass it on ..... Heck if you have different email address's use them to sign it again just choose another family members name. Michael Vick makes a 138 million a year playing for the  Falcons as a Quarter back. I hope like hell someone takes this man out!!! Maybe we will be lucky enough to get a crazy sniper person to take care of this for the sake of the dogs.  *content removed*  is what this man and his friends who have all participated in this are and I hope that they all pay in some way for what they have done.  It was all I could do to watch Nancy Grace lastnight and seeing those dogs going at it like they were. ;Please sign it and pass it on...It only takes a few seconds and maybe just maybe it will help!!!! thanks for letting me vent
