One good thing about coming back to work now is that tax season is in full swing so I got to jump right in!  Tax returns are my favorite part of my job and keep me really busy all day so the day just flew by!

I'm just curious. Do most 2 earner couples claim zero for deductions throughout the year? My friend says they do and always get a large refund. I don't want a large refund, but I'd like for us not to owe every year. We each claim 1 right now but other than our house, we have no deductions.

It seems like it's been raining for days with no break. We really need it and the mountains are getting a ton of snow, so that's good too. Maybe we won't be in drought conditions this year after all.

I have chile verde cooking in the crockpot for dinner tonight, so that'll be nice to go home to.

I can't speak for what most claim b/c not many of our taxpayers have normal salary income.  They are mostly Dr's with very high income and outside sources of income as well so we actually have to do estimates on them and tell them a % to have W/H on their checks which is typically much higher.

For a normal salaried couple though with W-2 income and maybe a little interest income, and either standard or itemized deductions, if you W/H as married and 0 or even Married but W/H at the single rate and 0, then you will most likely have a decent refund.  It is the safer route to go if you don't want to owe and don't want to make estimates.  Both my husband and I have W-2 income, but it flucutates b/c we both get overtime, so we both withhold at Married but W/H at the single rate and 0 and I even withhold an extra $20 a check.  We are right at the level every year that if congress doesn't extend the AMT provisions, then we would have to pay it.  And they never pass it until late in the year so we just like to be safe rather than sorry.  There are so many factors that go into it though so if a significant amount of your income comes from other sources, that theory can be blown.  The federal W/H is all based on IRS tables so it isn't foolproof.  It doesn't account for fluctuations in income or outside sources of income at all.  You can actually look at the tables and figure out how it would change your W/H if you want to aim for something different if you know how much you want to be coming out...you can also leave your W/H where it is and just ask your employer to W/H a specific extra amount each check to try to get to where you will not owe at year end.  As for California, I don't really know the answer.  Here in the great state of TX we don't pay state income tax.  And I know from experience, California is a PIA when it comes to taxes...at least for businesses they are!

What time is dinner?  Yummy!  My DH and I both claim 0 deductions and we don't get a huge refund but we normally get a refund of a few hundred.  I hate to let the government keep my money all year, interest free.

Oh Shooter you are a gross little doggie at times Ick! But glad you puked it up.

Bugsy was ahead of the puking curve and did his in the night on Sunday.  Had beef heart at dinner and I'll just say that is a stain that ain't coming out of the ivory colored rug - just looked for a replacement but nothing great out there.

I am totally ready for DH to be home now - but not till Thursday Sad

My leg/foot feels a bit better but still icing it and trying to stay off of it.  I fear this is going to take a while Tongue Tied

OK lunch and then lots of work to do

I'm so glad you liked it. It's easy and relatively inexpensive, so it's a favorite of ours too.

I really should just bite the bullet and change my withholding, but I don't want a smaller paycheck. Maybe I can talk DH into doing it Wink

You could also take the average of what you normally owe, divide it by how many pay periods you have left this year and just have that amount withheld out of either of your checks...or even half that amount out of each of your checks etc etc.  That would get you closer to not owing without going over very much.  It might make you even get a small refund in the future years since this year we are already into mid February.

Because we do have other income that fluctuates greatly, it's sort of a wild guess as to how much it'll be each year. Last year was huge. This year with big losses and no gains on investments, it wasn't as bad. Unfortunately, we can't write off the losses against dividends and interest Sad. On a brighter note, TurboTax said that although we didn't qualify for the tax rebate last year, due to a change in our income for this year, we now qualify. I wish they'd just apply it to the taxes we owe, but that wasn't offered.

I can't get any work done today.  It's not my fault, I keep getting all these funny emails and of course I have to look at them and then send them on.  LOL

That's what we always did too.  No deductions and a nice, hefty refund.  Then last year I got zapped.  I had no idea what a big chunk the late DH was having withheld. Surprise The tax preparer said I should have about $300 a month taken out, which is kind of a big chunk.  So I just did a quick re-fi and paid off the car and it all worked out.  Now on Wednesday I get to see if that helped any. Honestly, I don't even care if I don't get anything back.  I just don't want to owe them anything. If I've got anything coming back from the state, I'll never see it anyway.  Maybe I'll get a nice frame and hang my IOU on the wall. Sad

That's how I feel now too. I'd actually be thrilled even to get an IOU from the state. Maybe my small contribution will help with the state deficit though Wink. I did just fill out a new W-4 and will claim zero for the duration of this year. We'll probably still owe, but at least it won't be as much.

I need some pep pills. I feel like I could doze off if I just had a more comfortable chair and knew my boss wasn't coming in.

DH and I are on a diet (sparkpeople.com), they plan out your menu, shopping list, etc.  They actually make it pretty easy and the best part is it is free.  However, I am STARVING!!!  I put on some weight after I stopped nursing and I want to get it off before we go to Palm Springs to visit my parents in April.  I refuse to be bigger than I was last year!  I just don't have the time to work out like I used to.

    Have a good day everyone!

    I'm on sparkpeople too.  I havent really followed the menu too much, I just try to eat lots of veggies & not pig out in general, but I have my days!! LOL;

I took a bunch of quizzes on there yesterday it was alot of fun, learned alot of new stuff. like after the age of 20 if you dont strength train you loose 1/2lb of muscle every year! eeek. DId a fast food quiz that was pretty interesting too.

I'm really sore from my workout yesterday, i did these crazy lunge squat things with weights ( 5lb woo) the whole underside of my thigh up to my bum is SORE! So this morning I did abs & upper body.  I was llooking on the comp last night & found pics of me from two years ago & really got a nice kick of motivation, I look SO SO BAD, I was about 35lbs heavier. and it does not look good on me!  So that def made me get outta bed and NOT skip my workout. I was suprised I got my BF to work out with me a little yesterday, he's not very enthusiastic about it lol.  but he wants to loose weight. He didn't join me this morning though. :(

Picked up my doggie scooter last night, ordered new tires & tubes for it. Its a kids scooter but well made ( its older like 80's early 90's), and it pretty much fits me, I dont have to slouch to grab the handlebars. Can't wait to try it out. Thats another good bum workout!! kick kick kick, mush doggies!!
