New Pup?

    New Pup?

    Oh boy.

Well, this story begins a few months ago.  I'll try to be brief.

I was at the doggy store picking up some treats and some people came in carrying a puppy that stopped me in my tracks.  He looked stunningly like Nikki.  I stopped them and commented, we chatted for a few minutes.  Turns out that they had just got him and he's a JRT/Chi mix, just like my girl. I told them when he gets a little older to let me know, we should have a play date, nothing like another JRT mix to keep your JRT mix busy!

So, I haven't heard a word from them.  All of a sudden, today - I get an email from her.  She appologized for not contacting me sooner.... and would I like her dog?  They have to move, and they are moving into a place that won't allow them a pet.  She remembered that I was a dog-person that had a dog that looked so much like her "little man" and that she would feel he was going to a safe home (boy, was she was right about that!)

Now he's a 5 month old little guy, he's been "refistrated" (does anyone know what that means? I looked it up in a dictionary and googled it.  Nothing.  I assume she means neutered... but, I"ll ask to be sure.)  and he's microchipped, has toys, crate trained, mostly ;potty-trained.  I told her I'd think about it.  I decided when I get home (out of town, in CHICAGO! So wonderful here, I love it!) I'll bring the girls by to meet him and see how they get along.

At this point, even if I don't bond with him, I'll feel like a foster mom at the very least.  The other option is he could be my fathers dog, he loves Nikki like crazy... and well, it'd be a great match. Or, I'd keep him of course.  I think I'll fall head over heels for the little guy and I think he and Nikki will be like long lost buddies.  Poor Missy (although I've read around here that if there are two high energy dogs they'll leave the low energey dog alone and play together.)

The only real problem is that I'm not supposed to have 3 dogs.  But I figure the two will look so similar it would be hard to prove, at least until I figure out what to do next.  I'm just scared this little guy will end up at the pound or worse if I don't take him.

Anyway - so, I've just said my piece, thanks for listening!  Any thoughts or advice is great! :)

    Here's a photo:

Oh, my gosh! Are you sure he's not Nikki's sibling, from another litter? They look SO much alike!! I don't see how you could NOT, especially if they get along well. Two active dogs (at least around here) will leave the less active dog in their dust and be crazy, together. He's so adorable.

I'm no good at saying no to cute dogs, LOL.

OMG he does look just like your Nikki. I would go for it! Cannot hurt. I would not be able to resist that FACE either... lol

Why are you not allowed to have three dogs? You did not say if it was a city thing or a landlord thing? If it is the city I know you can get a permit that says you do foster care and have it waived.  If it is a landlord thing, try talking and explaining the situation that they are LITTLE dogs, hehehe! Sometimes they give a little or tell the management you are fostering for someone.

I say don't pass go don't collect 200 dollars, go get that pup.

Thanks guys!  He is really cute isn't he?  I maybe a it partial msyelf of course [8|]

Also, anyone have advice on introducing 2 dogs to 1 new one?  I'll be taking the girls to his house.  What's the best way to do this?  Any thoughts?

Jennie, they do look like they could be siblings, don't they?  He's probably going to be a bit bigger.  He's 10lbs at 5 months.  Nikki is 11lbs full grown.  I wonder how big he'll get!  They potentially could be sibblings, Nikki came to me from a BYB (long story!) and this guy came in from the Humane Society.... so, it could definitely be!  He looks to be more JRT while she looks to be more Chi (just cause she's so small)

Heh - apparently I can't resist that face either!  [sm=smack.gif]  Is it possible to turn down a dog that looks almost exactly like yours?  I think there is an unwritten rule somewhere that says you have to take them!

Julie - it's neither of those, unfortunately!  It's part of my condo rules.  I live in a townhouse that allows only 1 pet!  I was grandfathered in with 2 dogs.... now to add a 3rd.  ((sigh))  I'm also babysitting for a friend of mine (Radar, for those of you who have seen him in the photo's section)  next week.  4 dogs!  I may go crazy!  They are all little, but for those of you with 4+ dogs I'm in awe (particularly those of you with large breeds!) Anyway, instead of asking them, I'm just going to ignore it, play it as discreet and keep my fingers crossed.  If it works out with him and my dad... then he'll go live in Reno anyway.  So, I'm trying not to focus on the 'breaking the rules' aspect of this!  Thank you for the advice though, I didn't know you could get a waiver if you were fostering a dog.  That's really good to know!

    Thanks so much guys!

What a cutie! I agree, you have to take him. I like the just keeping it quiet idea.  It's likely no one will even notice. [;)]

Keep us posted! And have fun in Chicago!! I want to hear about it in NDR or e-mail [:D]

I'm with everyone else, you have to take him. What about telling your association he's a foster if you get caught with an extra dog? Or, you also said he could be your dad's dog. If you get caught with the extra dog, would your dad be willing to take him?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yep, they could be twins, except for the *ahem* male genitalia.  But they sit low to the ground - who'll be able to see it?!?
    • Gold Top Dog
My dog Pepe is a JRT/chi mix too and if i could find another cutie like him i would snatch him up in a second.  So if I were you i would go for it.

    Here's my boy:

Go for it! (I'll keep your secret)

Whooo!  What a fast week!  Can't believe I'm home already.  The girls were almost as delighted to see me as I was to see them [:D]  Chicago was great!  I had a fabulous time, I'll be sure to get a report somewhere, thanks for the request Jen [;)]

OK - I'm taking the girls to meet him tomorrow and, should it go well, bring him home.  I've been thinking of names as I don't like his current one much (Gotti) and have been thinking "Chase" is cute, but we'll have to see what his personality matches.

Thanks for all the secret keeping guys, you are all too good to me [:)]  Also, I appreciate the confirmation on just ignoring the rules and hoping no one notices.  I don't take them for many walks, I usually just take them to see my horse with me, which affords them a lot of excercise.  Hopefully no one is really paying attention!

Here's another photo she sent me, isn't he an adorable, ;patient pooch?!

Since he looks like Nikki, if anyone asks, just say no, I have the little pug looking one and another one that is a JRT/Chi mix...........you aren't "technically" lying, you do have "another" one that is a JRT/Chi mix....hehehee
    • Gold Top Dog
Lani, he's sooooooooooooooo cute!  How can you NOT make him a member of your pack?  I agree with the silence treatment as far as your condo assoc goes.  What they don't know won't hurt them.  And if they get sticky about it, you know you can always send Nikki to me. :o)
    • Gold Top Dog
I agree- just let any busybodies think the dog they are looking at is Nikki (Nick, Nikki sounds like the same name so who would be the wiser?). Of course, this means you can't walk both Nikki and the new dog at the same time.
If you do get caught, do what we did - just tell them he is "visiting" as you have houseguests for a few days. My HOA just said "Oh, sorry we thought he belonged to you, didn't know he was a guests dog"
Ha Ha Ha - we kept that story up for three years!

He is such a cutie and im happy you are going too get him!!!
