They’re going to watch these kids very carefully for eating problems, growing (problems), and then seizures, jaundice, heart problems, lung problems, blindness, developmental delays — there’s a laundry list of things. Long term, because some of these children will be physically or mentally challenged, there’s a looming price tag out here. The hospital bill alone will run $1.5 to $3 million. Forget about getting to college; just to get through special-needs stuff - it’s going to have to come from somewhere, either the taxpayers of California or her family or her church or the hospital. But she can’t do it alone.
Breastfeeding??? Figuring that a full-term newborn eats about eight and twelve times a day, taking about two to three ounces per feeding (every baby is different, and these averages are for full-term singletons not preemie octuplets, but let’s work on the assumption that the octuplets will grow quickly.) With 128 ounces to a gallon they would consume that means that together they would need about two gallons a day. Nursing is supply and demand, the more demanded of your body, the more it supplies. A body doesn’t know if it is feeding eight babies or one very, very hungry baby, it just rises to the occasion — or tries to. Then she has to eat and increase her calorie intake for each kid in order for the body to be able to produce milk and it be healthy. If she is successful, she will be walking around with two gal milk jugs on her chest. Hey, Pamela Anderson can do it, why not? ( the milk jugs I mean).
Equally impossible, is feeding all the babies exclusively from the breast. Let’s say each feeding takes 15 minutes on average (a low estimate) Then assume an average of ten feedings per child per day. That’s four hours per baby, multiplied by all the babies, would require a 32-hour day. You see the problem. The only way it is remotely possible would be to double electric pump and even that would take such time with 8 babies, diapers, baths, etc and 6 other children to care for how could she possibly do it??? Not... Her poor mother who probably wants nothing but a normal life is now thrown into this horrible situation to help care for all these children when I am sure she would probably just like to be retired and seeing her grandchildren for enjoyment. This is a sad, sad situation this lady is so selfish and hoping for a big movie/book/reality opportunity for sure.
