What are the funniest things someone has ever said to you about your dogs?

Sheesh, guys, you can be a perfectly good dog owner without an encyclopedic knowledge of breeds and their characteristics! Reading this thread makes me terrified of asking anyone what breed their dog is ever again. Heaven forbid I not automatically recognize a mini australian shepherd or a pharoah hound or a german shorthaired pointer! There have been tons of times when I've asked "Is your dog a ____?" only to find out I'm way off the mark. I never thought anyone would be offended, or mentally laughing at me. Asking is still a good way to learn, right? [;)]

LOL Ask away! I love to tell people about Gizmo's wonderful breed! I ask people about their dogs all the time.[:D]

It is the folks who don't respect my answer and insist that I don't know what he is that I have to laugh about----especially the woman who was chastising me about owning a designer mix.

As for the town hall[8|]....I think they should have every breed on list so that a dog's registration properly identifies what he looks like. If they listed a Chevy SUV as a Dodge Van I would feel the same way.

Since Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are not real popular I ALWAYS have people ask what kind of dog he is?  It always generates conversation, like he looks like a huge  Lab/Beagle or he looks like a St. Benard..  But the best was when an a man once asked what kind of animal is that?

    It's a dog you dope![:D]

I just hear the normal lines fromthe Lassie movie with my dog.
Once a few weeks go at the dog park. a bunch of tourists (from China or Japan) were walking. my dog came walking by them, not even looking at them. And they started screaming at the top of their lungs " IT A FOX!" And then started talking in chineese japenese whatever it was I dont know it lol. And all clamed together. I was laughing. I walked by and leashed my dog so they would be so scared anymore. Then they freaked out more screaming "She own the fox" and asking me in broken english why i owned a fox lol. I explained (trying to make them understand) that he was a "lassie" dog.

I am beginning to have little tolerance for the Maryl Streep, "A dingo stole my baby!" quote too. It's getting old

I can relate to this too. Having a collie all you ever hear is.
    "Wheres Timmy?"
    "LASSIEEEEEEEEE"
"Did Timmy fall in a well?"

I didn't mind when I had my Lassie-colored Sheltie... kids everywhere would see her and exclaim, "LASSIE!!!!!" and run up and throw their arms around her. She thought that was just the greatest thing ever. [:)]

I was walking Shailer and I saw 3-4 kids in a yard playing and I got off the sidewalk and into the road because he is a little hyper around kids and I didn't want him to jump on them and scratch them or what not. Well I was on my way when they all came up to me and started petting him with out asking me and after about 5 seconds they asked  "Does he bite?" [8|]

Did you know i own a REAL fox? [:D]

I also had two people try to tell my that my sable/orange Pom is a Fox.
When i told them he was an akc registered Pom they got all sad and was like " oh...well..at least he's cute"
yeah...but i dont care what you think..

I had someone ask me today if Lex was a "razorback"? I said "do you mean Rhodesian ridgeback?" She said " oh yea those dogs". I said " No ridgebacks are taller, RED, and have smooth coats." And then she began to tell me some story about how she rescued some " ridgebacks" and they looked just like him.
    Wow. [sm=smack.gif]

My favorite is when people ask if my Chihuahua is a "teacup."  I just say "No, he's a dog."  [;)

I've had my Chi referred to as a rat before (not very original)...and he's also been compared to a Martian, due to his big eyes (slightly funnier).  Personally, I think he looks more like "The Brain" from Pinky and the Brain... [:D]

When I told one guy that I rescued my pup from the shelter, he asked if that's why her legs were so short...I was very confused and asked what he meant.

He thought the shelter must have kept her in a cage that was too low to the ground for her legs to grow! [:D] I had to try *very* hard to hold back the laughter...once I said the word "corgi" he blushed...I think he realized how silly he must have sounded.

Isn't there a specific kind of Chiuahua that is referred to as a "teacup"? I always see them listed....

No there isn't, but you will see plenty of ads for them [:@] "Teacup" is a marketing term. There are long and short haired chis but they should all be around the same size---under 6 pounds.

The sad truth is that some unscrupulous people deliberately breed undersized dogs to create even smaller toy dogs, call them "teacups" and charge outrageous prices for them. These undersized dogs have many health problems.

Here is the chi club of america statement on this:

BTW This isn't the only breed that suffers from this kind of marketing. [:o]

We had a mongrel who had to wear a big collar to stop him from licking a wound. Some people used to ask did he receive all of the sattelite channels. All we could do was laugh, because we used to say that at home too. The poor fella hated having it on, and my GSD used to try and pull it off him in sympathy!

Exactly.  It is a widespread popularized term that means absolutely nothing.  Unfortunately, it is used so much that many ;people think there really is a distinction, which I guess I can't blame...unless they are fellow Chi owners, and then I think they should know better.  What gets me the most is when other people actually argue about it and maintain that there IS such thing, because "they HAVE a teacup at home" or else they "know someone who knows someone who knows someone that has one."

That is very interesting! Thanks for clarifying that. It is really confusing! I have heard them mentioned so much that I would never have known. And since I am not educated on all breeds I would have definitely not known. See? You learn something new every day! [;)]
