Tough Decision

    • Gold Top Dog

Steph--I just wanted to say to you that if what you want is to rehome Mystic, it can be done.  I mean, listen, Willow's needs are very similar and the concerns you have about other dogs even strays are very real for me.  And, I had NO dog experience at all, she's my first dog.  So, if Willow can make it with ME, the rescue can find someone for Mystic.

I just wanted to put your mind at ease.

Hope you are doing well today and that Blaze is feeling OK.

Hi honey. I don't have any other suggestion just wanted to let you know you are in my prayers and thoughts. I know this is a really hard dissicion to make and no one should judge you for it. Hugs to you and your pack.

Ok, I called the rescue from this area.  They can't take her but said that they could list her on their website and they would help screen adopters.  I asked if she felt there was a chance for her to be adopted and she said it was slim, maybe 20%.  She said with the economy right now, adoptions are down and her separation anxiety is going to be the biggest problem.  If they list her on the website, I would be keeping her until she gets adopted.  I don't think I can do that, take that risk with Blaze.

After talking to her I looked over their website again, and I'm not sure they can list her after all.  It says they can't list dogs w/ a bite history.  Later on the page it also said that if your dog has seriously injured another animal to please consider euthanasia.

Sounds like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.  It does sound like they are not going to be able to take her and I know you knew that it wasn't a sure thing.  Let us help you if there is any thing at all we can do.  I am thinking about you so much and praying you find comfort and strength.  Hugs.

Emma is a dog who can never be rehomed. It's hard to even THINK about, but arrangements are already made. If something happens  to me and I cannot care for her, she's to be euthanized. If she couldn't live in my household for whatever reason, she'd be euthanized. Some dogs just aren't rehomable, and it's sad (because... we love them!), but it is what it is.

I'm  sorry that you're faced with this. I wish you strength, whatever the outcome.

When I contacted a lab rescue when I thought I'd have to rehome Sassy, they weren't able to offer me much hope either. They basically told me the same thing as they told you. Any of us that have any experience with shelters and rescues know that their plates are full. They'd love to take them all, but they can't possibly. It's hard enough for them to place the dogs who have no behavior issues, but for one that has been agressive to humans or dogs, it's highly unlikely. I'm so very sorry. I've been so close to this place you're at and I know the pain you're feeling. You've given Mystic a chance she might not have ever had otherwise, so please don't beat yourself up over the "what ifs". We're all here to help hold you up with whatever you need to do. You're not alone and we really do understand.

I've read through all the replies. And if it's going to be that difficult to re-home her, even through Akita rescue, then the kind and responsible thing to do is end the misery. So, I would agree with Glenda on that. It may be what is safest for her, others, and yourself. And the most humane. I know others have had some success taking in such a dog but each situation is different.

    I'm in your corner.

     Mine does too; I'm praying you'll have the strength to get through this whatever you decide; {{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}

Just a thought; is there any medication that helps calm aggressive dogs?

    • Gold Top Dog

I can't even imagine how difficult this must be for you.  Only you know what's best for Mystic, and whether that is rehoming or euthanasia, you'll receive no judgment here.  Only the hope that the solution can find peace for all of you.

Hugs, and I'll keep you in my thoughts.

     Steph,

Have you considered contacting Dogtown?  This is the rescue group that took in and rehabed most of  Michael Vick's pitbulls.  I'm pretty sure that they don't have the attack rules that your local rescue has. I believe that they also have a policy of keeping dogs that can't be rehomed.  They'll live @ Dogtown for life.

I could be mistaken about their rules etc.. but all shots are worth taking in your situation.

    Good luck and God Bless.

    I'm also Steph.
