I understand the length of time it takes [][] but since the article didn't mention it, I've been thinking that they hadn't even taken samples yet. I guess they probably did.

Actually, I remember reading in one of the first articles that came out about this that DNA samples had been taken.

Unfortunately part of my past experience as a mod on a dogboard had to do with dealing with a poster who was majorly into bestiality.  That particular group simply labeled it "love and an inter-species relationship".  It got worse -- much much much worse.  And unfortunately it can pander to any weird deviant junk.
 
This is heinous abuse -- and I'm not going to go any further into this because I'm absolutely not going to be guilty of simply titilating anyone's interest.  My ultimate fear in this, and frankly it's reinforced by the lack of real 'news' that is traceable in this, is that one of the reasons this man is so 'protective' of his dog is simply because he would far far rather have the 'public' think this was simply a 'mistake' than the horrific accident it was.  It's possible the dog mixing it up with the child was an accident -- but really depraved sexual stuff exists out there which is beyond what most of we 'normal people' can even contemplate or should *try* to contemplate.
 
I just hope and pray that whoever is investigating this is keeping it quiet.  I hope no one ever knows what really went on.  I hope those truly guilty in this are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. 
 
Unfortunately I hope they don't place this dog.  Not without unbelieveably in-depth screening.  And I doubt like heck they'd bother.  There are just some things humans can do to dogs in training that are beyond even knowing how to deal with them.   I wish I was far more naive about such things -- one friend of mind adopted a spaniel that had been sodomized by his first owner, so I understand the motivation to trying to "help".  But I also know how badly damaged that poor dog was mentally.  
 
I don't think anyone will 'know' (at least I hope like heck they never publicize this) what really happened.  Sometimes there's a difference between the public's 'right to know' and stuff NO one *needs* to know.
