    Living with two intact dogs

So I've never lived with two intact dogs before. But Roomie has an intact male who has no manners or restraint when it comes to females in heat. Sandy isn't spayed yet and I'm not planning on spaying her until she's closer to a year so she'll be going through at least one maybe two heats ( I think!) This area is new to me since all my females have been spayed by 8 months. With Maze, she never went through a heat and she was spayed at 8 months.

Now my question(s) are: How do you deal with a male and female intact in the same house? I've already got plans in my head that I've gone over with Roomie so I have his permission to deal with his dog (cuz he won't). I keep joking about putting two large locks on the door leading to the basement but the more I think about it, the more I want to do it. Lol.

Also, how do you keep the mess to a minium? I've heard of people using boxers and pads on their dogs.. How does that work??? Lol

Sorry if these questions seem a bit dumb but like I said, I've never had to deal with this problem before.

Mod's feel free to move this.. I wasn't to sure where to put it. Lol

I think generally the responsibility lies with the bitches owner, so if you don't trust your roomie, you might want to board your dog or see if someone else can take her while she is in heat (or maybe offer to have the male boarded).  Some people don't have many problems with intact animals, but in other cases, the male would go THROUGH the door/wall you are thinking of locking, lol.  You wouldn't want to find out the hard way he is the later.

Some people use boxers or boxer briefs but turn it backwards so the tail can stick out the hole in the front, then put a pad on the inside.  I've also seen people use a baby diaper and cut a hole for the tail.  Some dogs will just clean themselves.

Well during this time (and any other time. Lol) I don't leave Sandy alone so I'd be here to keep an eagle eye on everyone. I can't afford to board her and no one else would keep an eye on her if I did ask a friend to watch her. *sigh*

I guess we'll just play by ear.

even if you sitting right there, they should NEVER be in the same room when she is in season...ANY part of the season...beginning...middle...or end. He or she MUST be in a secure crate behind a closed door when the other is at liberty...period. You will NOT be fast enough to prevent a tie...and they need NOT tie for her to become pregnant.

Breedings can seem to take forever...or they can happen in the wink of an eye...which do you think happens when you do NOT want your bitch, bred? Wink

    Of course! Lol.

Well Roomie doesn't have a crate for Wolf but I do have an airline crate for Sandy I can keep handy.

Since she's so little, if Wolf comes up stairs with Roomie, can I just pick her up and keep her out of reach until he goes back down? Or should I just remove her completely?

*mutters to self* Sandy is my LAST female for a while.. Lol

You will have to see how he is. If he is a large enough dog to knock you down, cause you to drop your girl, is a reactive dog..you may find yourself covered in scratches or bites as he tries to get UP to her.

In general picking up a small dog makes that dog MORE interesting and not less...it will tend to cause jumping UP of the dog below....even without hormones involved which I have personally witness cause a split lip in the person holding the dog, falls, and loss of control over the dog being held above and they run off...

     Take her away completly.

Wolf's gonna do everything he can to smell, lick, and try to get to Sandy regardless if your holding her.

BTW....HE may know she is coming in before you do...and if she has a silent season you may not know, at all...butfor his actions which may be nothing one day and a mount and breeding the next. Not all bitches cycle the same...with swelling and bleeding obvious and well marked....some hardly swell, hardly discharge or change their demeanor....

Common behaviors in a male living with intact bitches I've seen firsthand, "complete ignoring" ...some males have low to no libido or seem "oversaturated" by the scent...it is everywhere so they just eventually tune it out. Or others, howl pretty much constantly when confined away from the bitch...go off their feed and lose vast amts of weight thruout the 3 weeks, make escape attempts, fixate totally on her or her location....mount other animals or people in frustration, etc.

BTW...is your breeder nearby? They might have a spare secure kennel they use themselves for such situations and you could use that...even if for a small fee?

*bangs head on desk* Something tells me Wolf is gonna be the latter...Really wish he would have neutered Wolf when the vet recommended it... *deep breath* Thank god I'm not keeping her intact for life...

    • Gold Top Dog

Yep. She's 20 minutes away. I'll talk to her and see what we can do. She has two intact males so they can handle it..

    • Gold Top Dog

how come you guys dont get Wolf neutered now? with a name like Wolf and the picture you've painted of him i dont think she's gonna be safe anywhere in that house....

    • Gold Top Dog

He's not my dog to neuter. He belongs to my roommate. And trust me, Wolf is as bad as the picture I painted.  Every year at the same time, Roomie lets Wolf run at the local native reserve because of the local female dog pack that runs there.  The AC won't do anything either.

And Roomie won't neuter Wolf either. Something about basing his manliness on Wolf's "bits".. Male ego *sigh*

Generally, the responsibility lies with the bitches owners?

How irresponsible is that outlook for all male owners, that basically just gives a green ticket for not neutering all male dogs.

Not a good message for responsible dog ownership!

    • Gold Top Dog

Generally, yes. If you don't get your female spayed, thats YOUR problem. See? It goes both ways? I personally have an intack male dog, he's never gotten out an I'm sure there have been females in season near by. He's one of those 'who cares' type dogs. I'm working on getting him neutered thou.

The blame can fall either way....and, it sort of does set a responsible dog ownership message, IMO, "IF you dont get your dogs spayed/neuterd, they get knocked up, or knock another up, which isnt responsible"...JMO

Kitty, can ya'll close a door to your part of the house? And keep her JUST up there unless your walking, ect. And when you let Sandy/Maze out, keep Wolf in.?
