Members-only dog parks?

I would pay the $8/day.  Go a time or two and see if you think it is worth a monthly membership.

If the park made an eexception for dogs who could pass a temperament test but were still intact, fine, but just as a blanket requirement, it annoys me.

I definitely understand your frustration, but there are some neutered dogs who for unknown reasons seem to react very badly to intact males. So while your dog might be great, some of these other normally-wonderful dogs might not be very nice to him. Perhaps this is some of the reasoning behind the rule?

You know, my boy Indy is somewhat dog aggressive- he hates certain TYPES of boys. He goes to the dog park very, very rarely (usually when we can guarantee it will be just about empty). Indy is a doll with people, very obedient for a corgi (He has a good recall and a good down, his heeling can be iffy- his household manners are great, but his competitive stuff still needs some work)- and people have started making this excuse for him. "Oh, some neutered dogs just don't like intact males." Well, Indy didn't like them when he was intact, either, and it's not just a neutered-intact thing- it's just he doesn't like them. If your dog doesn't get along with (at least to the point of ignoring if re-directed) everyone? He has no business at a dog park, intact or neutered.

I was wrong. [:(]  I asked my co-worker, who has two young Pyrs, a male and female.  She said they were going to sign up, but they would not allow Boomer b/c he's intact.  He is going to be shown and bred.  She is good friends w/ her breeder and their male dog is getting old, so they've been waiting for an appropriate male pup worthy of breeding to come along and Boomer is that pup.  She said they would not make an exception for a male finishing a championship.  [&:]

The dog park I use is run by the forest preserve and it is completely fenced in.  To use the fenced dog areas, you need a permit.  It costs $30 a year for one dog and I think $15 for every other dog after that first one.  The cost of the permit is for general upkeep.

Oh, I love this idea! I wish we had one here!! .. i'd go in a heart beat.

Missy is a "redneck" she likes to walk around and sniff things and Nikki loves little dogs, almost exclusively. Tha'd be perfect!!! [:)]

I like the concept, but I wouldn't support that one simply because well, Mal's not neutered, and he won't be until he finishes hiss championship. He's got fantastic temperament though, is excellent with other dogs, and frankly, there is no REASON for him to be neutered. If the park made an eexception for dogs who could pass a temperament test but were still intact, fine, but just as a blanket requirement, it annoys me.

I agree.  I wonder if these parks would make some kind of exception, since Mal is being shown and titled.  He's obviously not being used for backyard breeding or intact "just because".  If I was in your situation I'd definitely ask if there's a way around it.  I think it would be more of a benefit for other dogs to be exposed to dogs that are so well trained and well behaved, regardless of whether or not they are intact.

I think that every owner of an unneuterred dog would want an "exception".  I don't go into dog parks with unneuterred male dogs, period.  To me, it is a recipe for trouble.
