Members-only dog parks?

Oh I just read your last post......about the grooming station. It's 9.00 as a member. They supply the towels, the tools, the tubs, the shampoos, the blow dryers and clean up the mess afterward.

Thanks, Mookies Mom!  I forgot you were local.

PS.  Are you coming to the Walk-n-Wagathon in September?

is there a registry for these parks - I am not finding any in the area
    • Gold Top Dog
"This is a 20 acre private dog park featuring a fenced dog park, one mile jogging trail, a large sand pile for climbing, a dog swimming pond, and a small dog area. A membership is required to use the park. These fees are $24 and up per month for the first dog and $5 and up per month for each additional dog. Visitors to the area may use the park on Sundays from 10 to 5 for an $8 per day fee for the first dog and $2.50 per additional dog."

Wow!  I would totally do that!  My dogs don't like to play with other dogs, they ignore them at the park, so the hiking and swimming would be enough to get me to pay.  They're planning a dog park for our town in the next year to two but the two areas (small dog/big dog) are going to be about an acre.  Total.  So 20 acres would absolutely rock!  Plus grooming stations?  I want to move up there!

Unfortunately we won't be at the Walk and Wagathon. I am out of town for the last 2 weeks of September. Did your post get moved about that event? If so where did it go?
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't think it got moved, I think it just falls down the pages.  We're going to go but we don't really know anyone since this is our first dog.  I volunteer there, but I typically do shifts right before closing when there's hardly anyone else around so I don't know that many people at the HSKC besides the new volunteer coordinator (I like her a lot).  That, and I got bit very bad and took a two week break and it's been hard to get as motivated around the dogs as I was before.  I helped train some new volunteers and I found I enjoy that.  The Wagathon sounds really fun w/ all the different groups of people they've invited for demos.  Have you gone before?

I haven't done the Wagathon before. For the last couple of years it has fallen on the same weekend as a bike race we attend. We did however go to the Blocktail party, which was a blast. Bodhi was in 7th Heaven - he was like a canine vacuum cleaner whenever we got too close to the "Bar" which was also lined with dog treats! Pity the poor cocktail waitress who was given the job of walking around with a tray full of frosty paws.

I'll have to scroll down and find the Wagathon info.

I like the concept, but I wouldn't support that one simply because well, Mal's not neutered, and he won't be until he finishes hiss championship. He's got fantastic temperament though, is excellent with other dogs, and frankly, there is no REASON for him to be neutered. If the park made an eexception for dogs who could pass a temperament test but were still intact, fine, but just as a blanket requirement, it annoys me.

I missed the Blocktail, but I worked at the annual spring open house/adoptathon.  It was crazy busy!  I'm an "adoptions assistant" for special events, meaning I sit in with the adoption counsellor and answer questions about the specific animal and bring the animal to them for interaction (the counsellors know all the adoption criteria, but do not ever work with the animals or know the proceedures for taking out animals, whereas I don't know the adoption criteria, but I know all the animals).

    Anyway, here's the Wagathon site:

I agree.  I wonder if these parks would make some kind of exception, since Mal is being shown and titled.  He's obviously not being used for backyard breeding or intact "just because".  If I was in your situation I'd definitely ask if there's a way around it.  I think it would be more of a benefit for other dogs to be exposed to dogs that are so well trained and well behaved, regardless of whether or not they are intact.

We adopted Bodhi a couple of years ago during the spring adopt-a-thon.
I found the form and am sending a donation to sponsor you, since we can't be there. Sending it snail mail.

    Back to topic.....dog park.

I definitely understand your frustration, but there are some neutered dogs who for unknown reasons seem to react very badly to intact males. So while your dog might be great, some of these other normally-wonderful dogs might not be very nice to him. Perhaps this is some of the reasoning behind the rule?

Oh why thank you!!  I'm going to pester my family about it too, but I'll wait until it gets a little closer.

Anyway, I'll have to stop out and check out the park sometime.  I can pay for a single day to see how Chop likes it, right?

Do you know of any other dog parks around here or any beaches where dogs are allowed?  We go to the Holland State Park a lot, but dogs can't go on the beach during the summer. [:(]

Try Norman Kruse park in Muskegon. The north end of the beach there was designated Dog Friendly. The last time we were up there was over a year ago. I just checked the website and it appears it still is dog friendly.

Hopefully we'll see you out at Shaggy Pines sometime.

Oh my gosh, I was just there less than 2 weeks ago!  Haha.  I didn't know that's the name of the park.  My in-laws own a small condo in Muskegon and it's just a few blocks from that park.  If we ever get invited back, I'll definitely take the dog!  I did notice several dogs in the water by the pier.  Sounds like the designated dog area is a little south of that, but hey that's better than nothing.
