She's a lovely girl. I love chickens, and they do have wonderful personalities!  If it helps, my boss has chickens and one was grabbed by one of her dogs, leading to a tear on her chest area. She was stitched up and healed just fine. She's still doing wellSmile

oh that does make me feel better!

she's doing well today.  I think she really liked being in the house all night. lol.  She was being a pain about her antibiotics. I ended up putting a towel over her & i had to hold it with my feet so I could use both hands to give her the medicine.  I bet it looked pretty funny.

thought you all might like to see a pic of  Bok as a baby

    AWWW!!

Bok is doing great. Although she hates being in a crate. Especially if the other chickens are around. She wants to go out & be with them. She's getting spoiled though! sleeping in the house ( in the crate), so warm & toasty. Ok not exactly toasting, but warmer than the chicken coop!

She was in the house yesterday & probably driving my BF nuts because the other chickens were at the back slider & Bok was just sitting there talking & cackling making noise because she could see the others.

She hates taking her medicine, she likes to put up a good fight.  She's laying eggs, so she wasn't traumatized too much!

My cousin also offered to help pay for some of the vet expense, he felt pretty awful about it. makes me happy that he's really maturing ( he's 18) & taking responsibility for stuff.

bok is a Light Brahma chicken, and she's big!!

awww! poor little girl! i'm glad she's doing well though :) when i was a little kid we had chickens.... and one in particular i named "Mean Chick" .. i didnt know about pecking orders then lol she was the boss. anyway she was.. anyway she was bullying a couple of bantam hens so i tried to shoo her off.... only she ended up flying out of the coop and right into my waiting dog's face. i rescued her but oh did i feel like a turd! i got so upset i grabbed this chicken and ran to my mom crying because she was hurt.

we put her in a box and kept her in the house until she got better. and she did! she was back to normal again.

fast forward some years and to when i got ducks.... one of the ducklings - half grown actually - was attacked by Kaydee. i was trying to catch it and put it in a bigger pen and Kaydee tried to help.  she had ignored those ducks all day long, quacking around just inches from her until she saw me trying to catch one! anyway i called DH and told him what had happened. i was worried and of course he was all like "um.... its a duck... i'm not paying to take dinner to the vet. butcher? yes.... vet? absolutely not." Hmm well FINE! i put the duck in a box and doctored him myself.... i called a vet and asked advice and followed it and he healed just fine. that was two years ago now. he's a daddy duck with 12 ducks of his own.. i named him Paleface too... he always had a yellow beak as opposed to an orange one.. otherwise i wouldnt have been able to tell him apart from the others. i like to brag to people just how tough Paleface is.... mauled by a bulldog when he was just a little guy and he survived in spite of it!

I'm so glad that Bok is healing.  She's a light brahma not a lite brahma? ~L~

    • Gold Top Dog

i had never heard of a brahma chicken until today. i thought brahma was a breed of cow lol

i have several bantams that look like this - some of the prettiest chickens i've ever had hatch out. one of them is even fuzzy like he stuck his toe in a light socket..

yup its Light Brahma, heres the link to McMurray

    http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/product/light_brahmas.html

The Brahmas are a very old breed from Asia, probably originating in India and brought to this country about 1850 by Yankee sailors on their return from trading in Far Eastern ports. Because of its massive size, full feathered shanks and toes, and striking black and white plumage pattern, it has always been one of the most interesting varieties to work with. Brahmas are exceptionally quiet, gentle, and easy to handle. Their small pea comb, great size, and heavy plumage make them almost immune to cold weather. The hens are good layers of brown eggs, especially in winter, and will also set. Cockerels develop a tremendous frame, grow rather slowly, but when fully fleshed make a beautiful roasting chicken. They are easy to dress with light plumage and yellow skin. Baby chicks are creamy white, but some have shades of gray on the back.
