Can dogs see their own reflection in a mirror?

I'm sorry -- I'm having a private chuckle here -- why WOULD they do anything other than ignore themselves?

Or ... maybe we're expecting them, like the guy who always gets on the elevator at the same time I do who adjusts his tie and flattens his hair before he steps off the elevator at Bankruptcy court?? (in the mirrored door)?

Just WHAT are we expecting them to do -- lean back and bark "DUDE -- I am one GOOD-lookin dog!!!" -- then does THAT mean that it's the vain ones who bark at their reflection?  And maybe they aren't so 'afraid' or 'aggressive' as they are saying "DAMN -- I TOLD HER to take me to a NEW GROOMER and I'm just about TICKED OFF that this new food still lets me get dandruff!!!

I'm more anthropomorphic than many, I admit it -- but just exactly WHAT sort of response are we expecting the dog to give if he "recognizes" himself??

If he talked TO himself we'd think he was crazy.

If he strutted he'd be accused of vanity

If he worried over that underbite, that notched ear or the general poor condition of his coat -- would that open up a whole new industry of vanity professionals (and tanning salons?) for our furry friends??

And how are we, mere humans that we are, supposed to interpret their comments when we already mostly think they are too cognitively impaired to do anything other than bark??

I'm sorry -- I'm sitting here collapsed in laughter.  The poor dogs can't win!!

I was told once a long time ago that dogs could only see in two dimension and because of that they can't possibly see their reflections. Well I never bought into that theory and neither have any of my dogs whom all at one point or another reacted to their reflections.

When we first moved into our home Maxine was a young'un. She discovered their was a dog outside! OMG please let me go out and play with that dog?! We would let her out... dang it's gone..no wait IT'S INSIDE! Can I come in?? This would go on as long as DH and I would let it. We found it amazingly humorous she would see her reflection and think it was another dog. This went on occasionally for the next few years.

So I OBVIOUSLY think dogs have no problem seeing their reflection. What they think it is? Well they are dogs, they keep that a secret. I have often wished my dogs had the gift of voice communication, I would love to hear their thoughts.

Bugsy has no response to himself in the mirror but he does as Brookcove expressed keep an eye on me or DH via the mirror.  Does it all the time, always has.  I have seen him sitting at the entrance to our master bath looking at the mirror which allows him to see me in the closet - way too nosy for my liking Big Smile
